Have you ever thought about growing veggies at your home? Believe me, those vegetables when cooked taste so good. The reason being you have taken care of the vegetables every day from the time it was a small seed to a fully-grown plant. There’s nothing like the fresh-looking veggies, juicy and sparkling with the natural colors.
Home gardening is fun and provides enjoyment. It may require some work to do, but it provides instant vegetables that are fresh and you don’t have to rush in the market to buy. You have the freedom to plant veggies of your own choice and provide your family with healthy and nutritious vegetables.
There are other benefits of home gardening apart from just the vegetables. It’s an exercise when you nurture the plant and you take your mind away from the stress and workload. Also, you can always ask your family members to help you and in that way you connect with them and develop a strong bond.
Home Gardening also helps you save money. Buying vegetables from the market will always be an expense, but when you grow your own vegetables, you just spend on seeds and fertilizers and you get veggies throughout the year. You save a lot by doing an R&D on which vegetables to grow.
Everyone these days are behind the organic stores where vegetables are so costlier, and we don’t even know if chemicals have not been used to grow them. Growing your own vegetables is the best way to go organic and save money. Also, you are into environmentally friendly consumption.
Now many of us never had our own garden and we might rush up to the stores to buy the essential requirements to grow our own garden. Before that let's understand a few basic things about how to get started.
To get started:
- You just need some soil, pots of your choice and decide on what kind of plants or vegetables you want to grow.
- Choose a location where the plants would get enough sunlight to grow.
- Decide on the size of your garden, and for that you need to consider factors like family size, your purpose of growing (leisure activity or to freeze), and the kind of vegetables you want to grow.
- Don’t rush on growing too many plants at a time, learn the art of growing and cultivating them, and then increase your gardening space.
- The location of the vegetables has to be carefully designed in a way such that all the plants make the most use of space and sunlight availability. For e.g., Plant tall ones at one corner away from small creepers so that the tall ones don’t shade the short ones.
- Understand the features of the vegetables like – best season to grow them, how much water do they need, etc.
- Nurture them properly and once vegetables are grown, have a healthy and delicious meal.
- Finally, maintain a logbook to keep a record of the planting. This will be useful during the next time you plant.
Vegetables that you can grow :
Tomatoes, Potatoes, Eggplant, Pepper, Squash, Corn, Salad Greens, such as leaf lettuce, arugula, endive, and cress, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Peas, Beet, Radishes, Leafy Greens(such as collards, mustard greens, spinach, and kale), and Beans.
Home gardeners feel a sense of satisfaction seeing their plants grow. This activity of home gardening is relaxing and also helps relieve your stress. You also get your family together and spend quality time with them gardening. With that being said, start your own home gardening.
