Reading is one of the most common and most celebrated hobbies.
While most of the people only read, there is a select who write so that others
can read. One of the most renowned authors among the youngsters in India is Mr.
Chetan Bhagat. Apart from being an author, he is a celebrated columnist,
screenwriter, and motivational speaker.
An average student in his school days, Chetan Bhagat, went
on to pursue mechanical engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of
Technology, Delhi. After his engineering, he went on to pursue an MBA from the Indian
Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, a premier business school in India. After
completing his education, he worked as an investment banker in Goldman Sachs
and then after in other leading companies.
In Class V, Mr. Bhagat was forced to contribute towards
writing for the school magazine, and in the years ahead, he developed a love
for writing. He considers writing to be a flexible career through which he
wants to bring about a change in society.
While working in Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong, he had already
published two novels, namely ‘Five Point
Someone’ and ‘One Night @ the Call
Center.’ These books soon became bestsellers, and one of his books set the
record for India’s fastest-selling book.
On a typical office day, Chetan Bhagat would be immersed in the
world of finance while his imagination and creativity churned out content for
his books. It was 2008 when he decided to quit his job and devote his time to
writing books.
His books are now in popular fiction. Through his compelling
writing and modern storytelling, he has made young India read. His books like ‘Half Girlfriend,’ ‘2 States’, and ‘The Girl
in Room 105’ captured the modern-day romance of the youth. There is
consistency, depth of character, and subtleness in his writings. He is simple
yet exciting in his wordplay.
The characters in his books are not perfect. They have their
charm and nuances that are liked by the readers. He is an artist when it comes to
depicting Indian characters with a western touch. His gripping storytelling
often tempts the readers to read his books in one go.
This fame has come with its share of criticism. Many critics
term his books as bubble gum reads, which means something designed to attract
adolescents. Some remark that his books are processed materials for reading in
a hurry. Classical writers have often criticized him on the grounds of poor
writing. At the same time, Mr. Bhagat has been appreciated by the likes of Shashi
Tharoor and Amitav Ghosh.
Chetan Bhagat admits that his books are not for everyone. He
attributes to the fact that he became a writer at the right time when English education
in India was gaining acceptance. The availability of internet services and e-commerce
also boosted his reach.
Some of his books have been adapted into Bollywood films.
Mr. Bhagat takes inspiration from the great Gulzar who was successful in
writing and then in film scripts as well.
He stills feels that there is a lot to be achieved through
his books and his writings.
