List of Disney Princesses in Chronological Order

A Portuguese article published last year listed out almost every Disney
princess that had ever appeared over the years. It is quite difficult to say
what a Disney Princess has to be considered “official”. 

According to Wikipedia, there are 12 official Disney princesses toy line owned by The Walt Disney Company. If we were to list all the princesses mentioned in the original article, we would have to list about 250 princesses. 

In the article, they are called so based on the fact that they are a princess in the story or even a Queen who did not marry a King directly or became a Queen directly. The character must also have been a part of a production that in some way or other be related to Disney.

In this article, you will be introduced to the twelve princesses in the order
of their appearance and four bonus “princesses”. The twelve princesses
are Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas,
Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, and Moana.

1.Princess

Puss in Boots (1922)

The first princess in Disney history comes from a short film from Walt
Disney’s first series of animations when his company was still called
‘Laugh-O-Gram Studio’. The princess appears to be the love interest of
the hero of the story that was inspired by Puss in Boots.

2. Snow White

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Snow White is the first “official” princess on the list. But she is not the
2nd princess created by Walt Disney; she is the seventh. Snow White was
the protagonist of Disney’s first animated feature which incidentally won
an honorary Oscar. 

Snow White forever remains a classic with her befriending the dwarves, being poisoned by her stepmother and being saved by Prince Charming.

3. Cinderella

Cinderella (1950)

The second “official” princess on the list. She was the 13th princess
created by Disney. Ironically the second princess to ever appear in the
was also called Cinderella. But she is not the Cinderella we all love and
know. 

Cinderella (1922) was produced by ‘Laugh-O-Gram Studio’ adapts
the story of the original Cinderella fairy tale but the setting is in the
1920s. 

The Cinderella of the 1950 animated feature film is set in the
times of the original story and became one of the company’s great
classics receiving its position as a “Disney Princess”.

4. Aurora

Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Another official princess on the list and the last of Disney's “classic” era.
She is the 20th princess created by Disney and the fourth official princess.
Although she spends most of the time in the movie sleeping, she has also become an icon of animation.

5. Ariel

The Little Mermaid (1989)

The first princess of the Disney Renaissance era, Ariel has also been part
of the Disney Princess franchise officially since its creation. 

Daughter of King Triton, princess of Atlantica and born a mermaid, she falls in love with a human prince and is willing to make big decisions to be with him.
She is the 29th princess to have been created.

6. Belle

Beauty and the Beast (1991)

The second princess of the Renaissance, Belle is also one of the “official
Disney princesses” since the creation of the franchise. 

Adapted from a French fairy tale, Belle decides to be the prisoner of the Beast to free her father, while having to fight the narcissist, Gaston. She is the 36th
princess to have been created by Walt Disney.

7. Jasmine

Aladdin (1992)

The 40th princess created by Disney, Jasmine, Princess of the Agrabah
sultanate, has been one of the official Disney princesses since the creation
of the franchise - including, one of the first to have a rebellious and
independent personality. 

She has great combat skills and has rarely appeared as a "damsel in distress".

8. Pocahontas

Pocahontas (1995)

The 57th princess created by the Franchise and a part of the “official
princesses”, Pocahontas is based on a royal legend, a Native American
“princess” - she is the daughter of Chief Powhatan, leader of a Native
American tribe, not necessarily a conventional royal family. 

One of the landmarks of this movie is its connection with the forest and nature, as well as in its “theme song” Colors of the Wind.

9. Fa Mulan

Mulan (1998)

If we consider only the films and other media in which she appears, Mulan
should not be on that list; after all, she is a Chinese warrior (not a princess) who goes to war to protect her father. 

But, for some reason, she is part of the Disney Princess franchise as an “official princess”. Therefore, in keeping with the previous order, she is the 70th princess to be introduced by Disney.

10. Mia Thermopolis

The Princess Diaries (2001)

The 87th princess to be launched by Disney, Mia, an ordinary teenager,
discovers that she is a princess, heir to the throne of the kingdom of
Genovia, when she meets her estranged grandmother Queen Clarisse
Renaldi who wants Mia to take her place as the rightful heir to the throne.

11. Tiana

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

The first official Disney princess of that century, Tiana is an independent
waitress living in New Orleans in the 1920s who ends up finding a frog
that is said to be a cursed prince. 

She is the first (and only) black character that is part of the Disney Princess franchise. The 146th princess introduced by the Disney Franchise.

12. Rapunzel

Tangled (2010)

Despite being an incredibly popular fairy tale, Rapunzel was only adapted
by Disney in 2010. 

Stuck in a tower for years, she escapes the tower against her mother’s wishes with the help of an outlaw Flynn to find the source of the lanterns that are released into the air every year on her birthday. 

After she escapes, she discovers she is the missing princess of the kingdom of Corona for whom the sky lanterns were released in the air hoping that the princess would see them and return home. She is the 157th princess introduced by the Disney Franchise.

13. Merida

Brave (2012)

The only Pixar princess to be crowned as an “official Disney princess”, Merida lives in Medieval Scotland. 

She is a free-spirited and fiery young woman who dislikes her princess duties, loves to ride, an expert with the bow and arrow and is considered rebellious by her parents, primarily by her mother. She is the 172nd princess to have appeared in the Disney Franchise.

14. Moana

Moana (2016)

One of the newest Disney princesses, Moana is the daughter of Chief Tui,
who expects his daughter to take control of the island in the future.

However, she is the one chosen by the ocean to break a great curse that
haunts her land. The 228th princess introduced by Disney and she is the first
Disney Princess of Polynesian origin.

15. Anna and Elsa

Frozen (2013)

One of Disney's greatest “new classics”, Frozens’ protagonists are the
sisters, Elsa and Anna, princesses of the Kingdom of Arendelle. They are
the 179th and 180th princesses respectively to have been introduced by
Disney. 

But despite their immense popularity, they are not listed as a part
of the official Disney Princess Franchise.
