1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

I grew up in a house without books. My parents were very young and busy working jobs to pay the rent and put food on the table for my three brothers and me. Books from the library were my escape, my educators, and my friends.

I was an avid reader and dreamed of one day writing something that would take the reader to a faraway place but back then I didn’t know how to start, or even if I could write a book.

2. When did you decide you wanted to be an Author?

I was so busy being a mum, a wife, and working a number of jobs that it wasn’t until I was in my early forties that I found the courage to put pen to paper. I quit my job and wrote my first book “Poppy Day” the story of a young girl living in London whose husband is a soldier serving in Afghanistan.

It really launched my career and once I had a readership, who have been so wonderfully loyal to my books, I never looked back. I am thankful every day for my readers and for being able to spend my days writing. It’s a dream come true.

3. Is it a financially stable career?

I think it can be hard to make a living writing. I am very fortunate that I am one of the UK’s most successful fiction writers and sell millions of books in dozens of countries all over the world, so for me it is stable. I never take it for granted though and know that happiness does not lie in material things.

4. Who is your favorite writer/author and why?

I have so many! But if I have to pick one, I would choose V.S Naipaul whose words transport me like no other. He picks me up and puts me down in a place of his choosing. I am immersed in his world and all my senses are in tune with what he describes. He is one of the most gifted authors I have ever read.

5. What piece of advice would you like to give to future aspiring writers?

Do it! Begin! Start anywhere, but pick up that notebook or laptop and get going. Don’t listen to that inner voice of self-sabotage that gives you a million reasons as to why you should not write. And remember you don’t have to start at the beginning;

You might start with an image, a scene, a conversation, a feeling, or an idea… get it down and let it grow in every direction. And before you know it you will have words on the page and you have begun. Write as often as you can.

Practice your craft. Learn from feedback and find your authentic author voice, don’t worry about being the next… whoever – be the first YOU!

6. Which is your favorite book and why?

I have a hundred favorite books! So it is very difficult to pick just one but out of all of those I would choose… “The Time Travellers Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger. It is a complex book at first and I don’t mind admitting it took me a while to understand what was going on! But once I hit my stride, I absolutely loved it.

Such an original concept of a girl who falls in love with a time traveler – she never knows what version of him is going to pitch up and their love has to transcend barriers of time, distance, and disruption. A beautiful, unique love story that I still remember fondly.
