Egalitarian Ideas
He has always been a man who had critical viewpoints about politics and challenged political establishments throughout his life.
He always chose the side of common people and worked for their welfare. It was actually during the Spanish Civil War when Orwell became a believer in Socialism. Even in his novels and works, he is seen to be warning about the dangers of a totalitarian state and government.
He sought the idea of a socialist state, where every people will be treated fairly and will promote an egalitarian state. George Orwell throughout his life stated that he was a democratic socialist and believed that only a true democratic socialist regime would support liberty.
The goal of socialism is to remove any kind of inequalities of wealth that typically exists in a capitalist state and each citizen share an equal amount of economic resources. His connection with socialism was not only an emotional but highly articulated engagement.
Most of us are familiar with Animal Farm which is an allegorical novel and 1984, a dystopian novel, both of them spoke highly of socialism and disregarded totalitarian state and government.
True Believer
Orwell started to detest Soviet-style communism when he ended up fighting Soviet communists during the Spanish Civil war and from then he became a true believer of socialism. He penned down a book called "A Homage to Catalonia" about his time in Catalonia serving in the anarchist and socialist forces.
After witnessing the success of these anarchists' groups in the revolution, be started to like the concept of socialism. His political ideologies developed and shifted during a tumultuous period in world history when war and revolutions were common.
George Orwell was born into a middle-class family and attended Eton, one of the exclusive private schools in Britain, before joining the Indian Imperial service in Burma (Myanmar) in the 1920s. The ugly and brutal experiences he encountered there, shaped his views about the world and politics.
Orwell returned to Europe in 1925 and started working in low wage jobs and observing the daily life and conditions of poor people. Seeing all this, he thought that capitalism must be overthrown, and the socialist party should be introduced in Britain.
He wanted to do something for the exploited workers under the capitalist regime.
Orwell planned to oppose the idea of the Second World War and even made preparations to build an underground organization that'll undertake illegal activities during the war. But at the end of the war, he was collapsed in despair as the revolution among workers didn't materialize.
It was during that time, he produced his famous work "Animal Farm", which was an instant success in Europe and the United States. Through" Animal Farm" he criticizes the devastating corruption and hypocrisy of the Soviet government under the rule of Stalin, the Communist dictator.
"Animal Farm" shows how good-hearted workers are always exploited and oppressed by powerful men. His way of handling of the animal characters and depicting them as humans were commendable and unique.
He warns people against leaders who are hungry for power and such people will not hesitate to deprive other citizens of their freedom. This novel remarkable for trying to make the world a better place for every individual.
With the end of the Second World War, things didn't turn out the way Orwell had predicted but he knew that Socialism can make Fascism go away. He never abandoned the idea of socialism and believed it and worked endlessly for it.
