The Evolution of Hip-Hop Culture in India



Hip hop is now considered as a global musical element through its international travels. 
According to the U.S. Department of State, hip hop has become the center of a mega music and fashion industry around the world that crosses social barriers and cuts across racial lines. 

A recent study says that hip hop is the world's favorite youth culture in which just about every country on the planet has developed its own local rap scene. 

Indian hip hop deemed as a part of the South Asian hip hop culture, is a genre of popular music developed in India. Desi hip hop is a term for music and culture which combines the influences of hip hop and Indian music.


The Four Elements of Hip-Hop 

  • Mcing - Rapping (also known as emceeing) refers to "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics with a strong rhythmic lyrics". Rapping typically features complex wordplay, rapid delivery, and a range of "street slang", some of which is very unique.
  • Deejaying - DJing and turntablism are the techniques of making sounds and creating music and beats using two or more electronic turntables (or other sound sources, such as tapes, CDs, or saved audio files) and a DJ mixer. 
  • Breakdancing:- Breaking, also called B-boying/B-girling or breakdancing, is a dynamic, rhythmic style of dance which developed as one of the major elements of hip hop culture.
  • Beatboxing:-Beatboxing is the technique of vocal singing, in which a singer imitates drums and other percussion instruments with her or his voice. It is primarily concerned with the art of creating beats or rhythms with the use of one's mouth.

The Journey of ‘Hip-Hop” in India

In 1990, Hip-Hop was introduced in India by Punjabi rapper Baba Sehgal (Harjeet Singh Sehgal). After that, a number of famous artists conquered the stage. Honey Singh is the rap god in India.

Honey Singh is the name that pops in our minds while thinking about Indian rap. His popularity as a rapper has grown over the years and also reached overseas. Most other rappers like Raftaar were initially associated with him as a part of his team.

Badshah, India's 'rap king', dethrones Taylor Swift and BTS on YouTube with 75 million views in 24 hours. The amount of money that these rappers make might vary but in general, they are able to lead a comfortable life by being in this profession. An indication of this can be understood from the fact that Indian Rapper “YoYo Honey Singh” earns Rs 18-20 crore.


Gully Boy - A Milestone in Bollywood

India’s 1st hit movie was released by Ritesh Sidhwani & directed by Zoya akhtar.Movie was inspired on the lives of Indian street rappers ,particularly about the street rapper from slums of Mumbai.

The cast included Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt , in supporting roles Kalki Koechlin, Vijay Verma, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Amrita Subhash and Vijay Verma were casted.

The movie was premiered in Berlin International film festival & selected as India’s entry in Best International Feature Film. Gully Boy won total 13 Filmfare awards and became the second movie in Bollywood to won all 4 acting awards.
In terms of revenue, it turned out to be 7th highest earning film of that year.
The film was “coming-of-the-age” story concept.

Another milestone - Not just a rapper, but the fastest rapper known, “Shubhan Chande” rapped a rap song called “Charso Bees” singing it completely within 45 seconds. The original run time of the song sung by “Bohemia” is 4 minutes 20 seconds.
