when I decided to follow this path it wasn't a easy career in India as it wasn’t easily available - as it was not in trend back then. but facing challenges and criticism is one of my biggest trends
1. Tell me about you and your journey.
I am a celebrity hair and makeup
artist with more than 6 years of experience in the industry. I started out as a
makeup artist in Inglot and then assisted several bollywood makeup and hair
artists in Mumbai. I have worked on several editorials, fashion weeks and
bollywood movies like zero, sky is pink etc. Since I was a kid I was always
inspired by beautiful things ; models, interiors, my mother putting on makeup.
Beauty has always fascinated and my love for makeup started in school.
So when
I finished high school, i straight away jumped into my passion for makeup. My
fortay is natural and skin like makeup and have also been teaching for over 2
years. The more I worked the more my love for the profession grew. Working on
diffrent people and meeting new people is what excited me . I still wake up
every morning and enjoy going to work . The best part is I can choose where and
for whom I have to work.
2. Why did you chose this career?
when I decided to follow this path it
wasn't a easy career in India as it wasn’t easily available - as it was not in
trend back then. but facing challenges and criticism is one
of my biggest trends. I knew from a very early age that I can’t do a 9-5 desk
job. Doing makeup and hair has always been therapeutic for me, it is when I am
most excited and calm at the same time. It has not been an easy
journey but definitely a fruitful one.
3. How can one build a clientele as a
makeup artist?
we live in a world of social media -
which is one of the best and the worst thing that can happen to a makeup
artist. being that it is one of the easiest ways to get your portfolio out in
the world and the worst is that it is full of competition. My advice to the
beginners would be to do as many collaboration shoots as possible and be active
on social media, another great way is to assist a senior
makeup artist, and the best way is to get out word from your family and friends
like any other business. The most important thing to build a clientele is to be
true to your style of makeup and figure out what your niche is.
4. What are some of your top makeup tips?
one of the biggest tips
that I can give to any makeup artist or anybody who loves makeup is that less
is more. Less goes on a long way and make sure you don't end up looking cakey.
When picking out foundations, stick to your own colour so it doesn't end up
turning grey. Always heat your eyelash curler and make sure it's your best
friend as it opens up your eyes. The last secret tip would be is to apply some
hair spray on your eyebrow brush so that your eyebrows do not move.
5. What kind of job opportunities one can
get after becoming a make up artist?
In this profession you have to keep
studying about the process. The learning is never ending. Be a quick learner and be
hungry for new information. as we all know that this is one of the biggest
booming businesses in the entire world. The possibilities and the opportunities
are endless and one must choose the path they want to take.
It can be working in makeup stores like
Mac , Bobbi brown etc. working in movies, working as an editorial makeup artist
or becoming a bridal makeup artist. The path i have chose is to jump into all
of it. Assisting an established artist is one of the best
opportunities as it not only brushes up your skills but also teaches you
professionalism, communication, and how to stay calm in tensed
situations.
6. Which professional courses would you
suggest for aspiring artists?
personally I believe that self
learning through the internet is the best way to go and then working with
somebody senior but some of the courses I would recommend to somebody who wants
to is - Daniel Bauer academy and Namrata Soni.
