Infertility is not being able to become pregnant or staying pregnant after one year of unprotected sex. Fertility in women decreases steadily with age. Women who are 35 years old and are unable to conceive after 6 months are said to be infertile. This may result in a problem with you or your partner or a combination of issues that prevent pregnancy. What Causes Infertility?
Infertility causes in couples are present at birth, sometimes they develop later. In about one-third of problems, the issue is with men, another one third with women, or both, or sometimes the reason is not found.
Causes of Male Infertility
Unusual sperm production due to genetic defects, health issues such as diabetes, or infections like Chlamydia, gonorrhea, mumps, or HIV. Extended veins in the testes can affect the quality of sperm.
Troubles with the delivery of sperm due to sexual problems premature ejaculations, genetic diseases as cystic fibrosis, structural problems like a blockage in testicles, or damage to reproductive organs.
Extensive exposure to environmental factors like pesticides, chemical radiations. Cigarette smoking, alcohol, weed, and taking medicine for bacterial infections, high levels of blood pressure, and depression can also affect fertility.
When the body is exposed to heat continuously it results in an increase in body temperature which damages sperm production. Cancer treatments also affect fertility.
Causes of Female Infertility
Hormonal disorders as polycystic ovary syndrome result in ovulation disorder which affects the release of eggs from ovaries. If you have too much prolactin, it interferes with ovulation. Thyroid hormones disturb the menstrual cycle and cause infertility. Too much exercise, eating disorders, and tumors may also cause infertility.
Abnormality in the shape of the uterus or cervical abnormalities leads to infertility. A benign tumor in the uterine wall blocks the fallopian tubes and stops the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus which leads to infertility.
Certain cancer treatments that involve radiation and therapy may affect fertility.
Early menopause makes the ovaries stop working which leads to infertility.
Sexually transmitted infections may cause fallopian tube blockage leading to infertility.
Other Factors
There are few other factors in both males and females which lead to infertility. They are:
Being underweight or overweight due to eating disorders. It is essential to take a proper diet and be healthy to give birth to a healthy baby.
A lack of exercise to body or over-exercise to the body increases the risk of infertility. When doing some workouts at the gym or extensive yoga, it is better to do under guidance. Exercise moderately for better results.
Alcohol consumption and smoking are other major risk factors. In men, excessive consumption of alcohol may lead to a decrease in sperm count.
What Can You Do?
It is better to have intercourse during the time of ovulation for the highest pregnancy rate. Ovulation occurs in the middle of the cycle which improves the chances of getting pregnant. One can limit caffeine intake and street drugs which contribute to infertility. Do not use medicine which may impact fertility. If you are above 35 or 40 years, having painful or irregular periods, and had multiple carriages; do not forget to consult your doctor for medications.
