When 100-200 Hours of Footage Is Cut Down, Every Single Person Is Misrepresented - Aparna Shewakramani (Indian Matchmaking, Netflix Participant)

Aparna Shewakramani

Aparna is an attorney living in Houston, Texas. She is a self-proclaimed avid traveler and the owner/founder of her own luxury travel company, My Golden Balloon. Aparna applies her zest for life to all that she does - from spending quality time to her family and her beloved dog, Conan, to volunteering locally in Houston.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I am an attorney in Houston and have lived in Texas since I was 7 years old. Prior to that, I lived in London and Dubai. I own a travel company called My Golden Balloon, which curates luxurious and immersive tours for professionals in their 20's, 30's and 40's.

2. Why did you decide to be a part of Indian matchmaking?

I was always open to meeting my partner through any avenue - be it at a wedding, through friends or on a dating app. I saw this process as just one more way I could potentially meet the right guy for me. I applied for the show on a whim and the rest is history!

3. Did you feel you were misrepresented, if so then why?

When 100-200 hours of footage is cut down to less than 2 hours on television, every single person is misrepresented. There is no way to fully show how nuanced and complex people are when they are broken down into stereotypical archetypes.

4. Has this show changed the way audiences and you perceive arrange marriages?

So many non-South Asians from all over the world shared with me that they were surprised none of us were "forced" into marriage, because they were operating under the belief that an arranged marriage was always a forced marriage. For them it was eye-opening to see all of us have our own opinions and the opportunity to say yes or no to our potential matches.

5. What advice would you give to season 2 contestants?

To be clear, no season 2 has been announced by Netflix but if there is one, I would tell contributors to truly consider if they are ready for a relationship that will lead to marriage (and quickly!). And also, have fun!

6. Is marriage on the cards for you anytime soon?

I sure hope so! Still looking for Mr. Right.

7. You're an independent lawyer, entrepreneur and now a reality tv star, what's next for you?

Hopefully I will add author to my list next. I am working on a book which will explore "Aparna's Rules for Life" and also take viewers behind the scenes of Indian Matchmaking.
