Impact of Mughal Emperors on Indian Historical Architecture

The Mughal emperors not only are responsible to have ruled over this vast territory of the Indian Subcontinent and the spread of Islam in the Indian subcontinent. They are also credited with bringing to India and beautifying India with its enormous and enriching architectural style.

Here we talk about some of the major Mughal emperors and their contributions to the Indian subcontinent. With Indo Persian style and magnificent dome architecture here are some that have never failed to impress us.

Babur

Babur is the first Mughal emperor, founder of the dynasty that ruled from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth century in the north of India. The major monument erected by Babur was – Babri Masjid, Jama Masjid, Panipat Mosque, and Kabuli Bagh Mosque.

Humayun

Most celebrated monument made during the reign of Humayun is the Humayun’s

Tomb. Made after the death of Humayun by Mirak Mirza Ghiyath under the patronage of Akbar. This acted as an inspiration for the Taj Mahal made later by his great-great-grandson Shah Jahan.

Akbar

Akbar built many monuments in Delhi and Agra. Some were built for protection, like Agra Fort, and some were built due to his love of architecture like Fatehpur Sikri, Buland Darwaza, Humayun’s Tomb, Jodhabai Palace, and Akbar’s Tomb. Akbar constructed his tomb during his lifetime

Jahangir

Jahangir built the Shalimar Gardens in Kashmir, as well as many grand buildings and gardens in Lahore.

Shah Jahan

Shah Jahan is credited with the building of various monuments. But the most celebrated of all is the Taj Mahal. A white marble tomb that Shah Jahan made in the memory of her late wife Mumtaz Mahal, in the vicinity of the river Ganga is the epitome of love in modern time.

Aurangzeb

Aurangzeb created a miniature marble mosque identified as the Moti Masjid or Pearl Mosque in the complex of Red Fort in Delhi. He also commanded the creation of the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore.

With influence from not just Indian but also Persian society. The Mughal monuments are a compilation of a variety of cultures. The patterns made on the monument are hand made with great precision and engraved and embedded with precious stones.

The stones and the color of paintings have remained intact through hundred of years. Each of the monument speaks a story. Some made for their loved ones and some in memory or to honor the other.

The Mughals are not only credited with the architecture of buildings and monuments but of gardens and tombs of Sufi saints as well. Babur is credited with the coming being of Charbagh architecture in India. This is seen in several Mughal monuments like the Taj Mahal or Humayun Tomb.

Filled with beauty and grace it never fails to amaze us…it makes one wonder how those domes must be made and how they were painted. It makes us ponder the grandeur of the empire and its vision.

The Mughal Architecture is reflective of its Emperors image and its vision. Significant of its wealth and connection and the multi-culturalism that it had. Something that is also included in the Wonders of the World and protected by both National and International organizations.
