Johanna Rae - Acting Is Like Many Other Professions, There Is a Ton of Work That Others Don't See (American SAG Actress, Producer, and Model)

Johanna Rae

It was in college that Johanna discovered the arts, having never seen theater before in her small town. Her passion for sports turned into a passion for acting on both the stage and the screen. Her drive to become an actress led her to Los Angeles to continue her studies.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I am from Winslow, Arkansas in a rural area with a population of 229. I was a track star first in high school earning me a four-year scholarship to college. It was during college that I truly found my love for acting and while modeling I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my passion and dreams.

2. Did you ever think or dream of being an actor?

I was always intrigued by films and the characters in them at a young age and would create characters and act them out myself. It was my freshman year in high school when I played the Queen in the play Snow White that I really fell in love with the process of becoming a character.

I went on to become a high school track star and my focus was on competitive track and field, once I went to college I joined the theater program and realized once again how much I loved it.

3. How can one approach their career and have the confidence and belief to become an actor?

Acting is like many other professions, there is a ton of work that others don't see, so it's important to have discipline and focus.

You're navigating through this huge ocean and you may only have a raft at first and not much else, while others have a huge ship, it's important to not compare yourself to others and what they are doing, instead focus on your own journey and getting a work towards getting a boat of your own.

You must believe in yourself and surround yourself with positive people that influence you in healthy ways not only in acting but in day to day life as well. If you don't have family or friend support, find an acting coach and class to grow your skills, keep you encouraged, and surrounded by others on the same journey.

I believe we as humans have the gift of instinct and gut feeling, that has been a blessing for me. Don't get discouraged by the word no, for every no I have gotten, I became a better actor and person, you will get the yes, it may take time but tenacity goes a long way in this industry.

4. Tell us more about your modeling, filmmaking, and production career.

I started my modeling career first as a swimsuit model in Dallas, Texas and working with Hawaiin Tropic brands and moving on into print work;

During this time is when I packed up and moved to Los Angeles to pursue my acting dreams and naturally doing indie films at first, I gained knowledge of the production and business side.

5. How do you define success for yourself?

Success for me would be am I happy with the outcome, do I feel happy with what I am doing and who I'm working with, am I growing and moving forward as a person, even if it's the tiniest of wins.

6 Which is your favorite book and why?

I loved Bram Stokers, Dracula and The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien were my two favorites as a teen. I have always loved fantasy fairy tale stories. Today I enjoy reading books based on history as well.
