Listen to your audiences properly, so that you can communicate with them effectively. Then only the other important things like diction, pronunciation, knowledge about a particular topic etc. will eventually fall into the appropriate place.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I am from a small village Niwari Kalan, district Etawah, U.P. and belong to a middle-class family. Me and my family experienced very hard times after missing of my father. I have started my journey from zero level and whatever I achieved in my life till now, I am very proud of that.

All that happened because of continuous support from my mother and elder sister. I started from a local radio station Radio Chaska at Gwalior, then hosted evening shows at My FM, Raipur. Then I moved to Kanpur and worked at Red FM.

Presently I am working at Radio City 104.8 FM, Kanpur, where I host the morning shows. That’s all about my journey. I am very satisfied with my endeavours. When I look back to my struggles, it always brings a smile on my face and a feeling of pride and satisfaction.

2. Why did you choose RJing as a career and what were the first steps you took?

Well...I didn't choose to become an RJ, my destiny took me there. The incidents of my life helped me to discover my destiny.

When I was in college and struggling with my B.C.A course at Gwalior, I got to know about The ongoing auditions for Radio Jockey at Gwalior and my journey starts from then.

I learned a lot by listening to famous RJs on radio and identified my passion for radio. I like this profession because it provides me with a platform to showcase my creative skills.

3. What challenges can one face during live calls?

Everyone from the radio industry understands that it is more important to know ‘ what we should not do as an RJ than what we should do’.

The audiences have the liberty to say and ask anything of their own choice but we RJs are responsible for handling those conversations smartly without involving in any type of controversy related to caste religion, politics and so on. So, we need to manage our words properly - this is the only challenge.

Otherwise, live calls are full of fun and sometimes give good feelings of talking with some interesting audience.

4. What are the skills required to be a radio jockey?

To become a good Radio Jockey, the most important skill is to be a good listener. Listen to your audiences properly, so that you can communicate with them effectively. Then only the other important things like diction, pronunciation, knowledge about a particular topic etc. will eventually fall into the appropriate place.

5.Does one also need to be technologically savvy in your favourite?

Tech-savvy…? Well...Yes! It's very important to be a tech-savvy in this profession. One needs to learn to code and develop apps...Kidding!!! No need to be highly technologically advanced, only basic computer knowledge is enough.

Creativity matters the most in this profession. And if I talk about the software's related to radio, anyone can learn them through training.

6. What makes a person connect with their audience as an RJ?

It’s very simple to connect with the audience.

Firstly, you need to know the area, your audiences and their taste, preferences and interests. Secondly, identify your area of interest and keep yourself updated with all the information related to that area or field so that you can have an engaging conversation with your audience on that topic.

For example, if you like Bollywood and always keep yourself updated with new releases, reviews, box office collection etc. You will be able to easily connect with your audience possessing similar types of interest.

7. What is the most interesting thing about this profession?

Everything is interesting. As I mentioned earlier, this profession is full of fun. You get the opportunity to talk to many interesting people, learn about their stories, share your own feelings with them, make them engaged with their favourite songs and other fun activities and many more things.

You can discuss any simple and small topic with your audience and also can create awareness for the society and about current situations. And most interestingly, you are getting paid for it. What else could be more interesting than that?
