Since March, we had to spend most of our time locked up in our houses with near to no work. In these times, we developed a new hobby, that is, binge watching series and TV shows for hours and hours straight. It, sort of, became our guilty pleasure.
Addicted?
We would just select a show out of our
‘to-watch list’ and sit in front of our mobile screens or laptop screens and
binge watch until the show’s over. As fun as it sounds, binge-watching can be
very addictive.
Once you have got comfortable with it, there
is no going back. If you start a show and do not complete it, you feel uneasy,
as if some important work is been left aside which needed to be finished as
soon as possible.
Not A Race
Binge-watching different shows in less amount
of time feels like an accomplishment to you, like reaching the ending point of
a race and winning the first position.
How Did It Start?
The early months of lockdown were as such
that there was near to 0 work for us and we needed something to keep us home
and not let us die out of boredom, thus binge-watching series seemed a good
idea then.
But things began to resume back to normal and
work and education had to be resumed, letting go of the habit people had
developed of sitting at one place and binge-watching series seemed quite
difficult.
It was difficult for us to accept that we
have to work again and the reality we live in is very different from the
reality shown in TV shows. Binge-watching had become such an integral part of
our lives during lockdown that we adapted it as a part of our lifestyle, we
somehow couldn’t separate it from our life.
Binge-Watching Affects Us Badly
Zero productivity during the whole day didn’t
seem to bother us as much as not being able to binge-watch did.
According to the survey done, statistics show
that an average American spends around 2.7 hours per day watching TV shows,
which adds up to almost 20 hours a week in total.
Next Generation Drowns
What’s scary is the fact the maximum people
who involve themselves in binge-watching is youth, people who are at peak of
their lives, who are filled with zest and energy.
It has made youth lethargic and unproductive.
A country’s future is said to be in the hands of youth but if the youth itself
shows no interest in any type of development or growth and sits around a like a
potato whole day then we can imagine the fate.
Once you finish binge-watching a series you
found irresistible to leave mid-way, you hit a dead end. You have no clue what
you should do next.
You are so lost in the world of the show you
watched, you feel alienated in the real world and everything feels dull to you
as it does not match the expectation bar you have set for your life based on
the lifestyle of the characters you loved seeing.
This is not at all good for our mental
health. Even our physical health is deteriorated as there’s no physical
activity performed by us. Obesity and cardiovascular diseases are found very
common and binge-watching might just add to one of its causes.
Nothing in excess has ever proved any good to
anyone and so is the case with excessive binge-watching. We must tell the
difference between right and wrong and this is absolutely wrong.
