It goes without saying that one has to work a lot to sharpen their public speaking, to make it crisp and interactive. To connect with the audience, you have to be bold and have to provide them entertainment. You should leave a strong impression, even if you speak for a very short interval.
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
I have always loved speaking
on a mike and believe that a person speaking on a mike has the power to grab the
attention of the audience, and is valued for that! Initially, I used to do a
lot of anchoring in college, and was quite appreciated for that, which
obviously boosted my confidence.
When a
friend approached me to anchor for a family function, I obviously agreed to
that, since I was being paid for something I absolutely loved. Slowly, I started hosting more functions,
sangeets, cooperates and various other events.
In one such event, an RJ was
present, who instantly grabbed the audiences’ attention, when he started
speaking. That’s when I realized the power of radio and wanted to be a part of
it!
Then along with anchoring, I started giving interviews for various radio
stations, and so here I am the voice of Indore for the show Super Women, and
have been working with MYFM for 4 years!
2. Do you face any issues in live calls?
Not at all! We are trained extensively, to take care of a lot of things, and understand that it is better to pre-record live calls a little in advance. This is because, you can never be sure of what the other person will say on the call, so it’s always safe to take the right precautions.
3. Is it necessary for one to be tech savvy for one to be an RJ?
I think learning to handle and operate the
console, is a big task. It took me around 6 months to become hands on with it!
So I believe, that yes, one must be technologically sound, else the amount of
blunders that can be committed will be disastrous. An RJ not only has to speak,
but has to simultaneously work on the console, so basic technical knowledge
is very much a pre-requisite for the job!
4. What makes an RJ connect with the audience?
To connect with the audience,
one has to be very lively! Also, more importantly, ‘reliability’ is the key.
Audience should feel that the person, on the other side is one of them and
faces similar situations as them.
For instance, talking about say an anecdote
with your mother might be helpful in breaking the ice. Apart from that, various
contests are organized so that the audience regularly listens and is connected
with us.
5. What advice would you like to give to future and aspiring RJs?
It goes without saying that one has to work a
lot to sharpen their public speaking, to make it crisp and interactive. To
connect with the audience, you have to be bold and have to provide them
entertainment. You should leave a strong impression, even if you speak for a
very short interval.
Further, one should read a lot, and develop their personality.
When you explore your personality, you discover a lot about yourself, which
helps you bring in the real and entertaining you, when you’re on air!
Listening
and learning from RJs, is also very important, as it is through them you get a
practical exposure to this job. Also, it is important to keep a track of
vacancies, so that you can interview and begin your journey as an RJ!
