We have got the list of the Top 10 OTT shows that people went bananas for in 2020 so that you don’t have to experiment anymore (it’s best left to the scientists anyway). See if you missed any, and experience first-hand what the whole deal really was about.

Tiger King | True-Crime

Are you drawn to Spotify podcasts on True Crime or find yourself hooked onto the features of the Investigation Discovery channel? Well, then Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness is just the show for you. Released on March 20, 2020 on Netflix, this controversial docu-miniseries centers around the life of a zookeeper, Joe Exotic, the niche world of big cat conservationists, and the dark side of wildlife conservation, and private breeding.

While the series and its creators have come under fire by the conservation and animal rights group for its inaccurate portrayals, the show has received mostly positive reviews by the critics and has been watched by over 34 million people over its first ten days of release, ranking as one of Netflix's most successful releases to date.

Big Brother Brasil | Reality TV

Similar to its Indian counterpart – Big Boss, and the American and Dutch reality TV of the same name, this Brazilian version of the Big Brother reality franchised television show holds the distinguished record of being the only one with 15 years of uninterrupted annual transmission on the same channels and by the same presenter.

The premise is a familiar one - A bunch of strangers co-exist 24*7 in a house cut off from the rest of the world, and under surveillance throughout the duration of the 3 months of the air-time. The participants fight for the grand prize and try avoiding weekly eviction. A Globo-owned pay-per-view channel and Rede Globo's website offer round-the-clock coverage for the show.

Money Heist | Crime-Drama

Unless you have been living under a rock, we are sure you’ve atleast heard of the phenomena that is Money Heist. Created by Álex Pina, and filmed in locations across Spain, Panama, Thailand, and Italy, the show is based on two heists orchestrated and led by the Professor. Narrated by an unreliable narrator with time jumps, flashbacks and concealed character motivations, this one keeps you hooked from the get-go.

After its runaway success with the Spanish network Antena 3, Netflix acquired its global streaming rights in late 2017. The show’s popularity, critical acclaim, and success warranted a more up-close-and-personal take so Netflix premiered a documentary titled Money Heist: The Phenomenon, involving the producers and the cast.

The series has been blazing up the award circuits, too, winning Best Drama Series at the 46th International Emmy Awards. The Italian anti-fascist OST Bella ciao from the show became a summer hit across Europe in 2018.

Cobra Kai | Comedy-Drama

For fans of the Karate Kid films, this truly is a treat. Set 34 years post the events of the original 1984 Robert Mark Kamen movie, the stars of the classic film Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence in this one. Launched on YouTube Red in 2018, and acquired by Netflix in June 2020, its third season released on January 1, 2021, and its fourth season has already been announced for a renewal.

Created by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, this critically-acclaimed series is based on a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who come together to solve the mystery of their father's death with the threat of an impending apocalypse in the background.

Released on Netflix on February 2019, the show’s first season has reportedly been watched by 45 million households during its first month of release and the immense popularity saw it getting renewed for a second season, which released subsequently in July 2020. In November 2020, the series was green-lit for a third season.

Created by Darren Start for Netflix, the series has created quite the stir in the online grapevine. With its breezy comedy interspersed with relatable drama, the show has found resonance among millions of people globally, and this popularity led to Netflix renewing the series in November 2020 for a second season.

Ozark | Crime-Drama

Released in July 2017, the show has been at the receiving end of critical acclaim and popular success across its three seasons and in June 2020, it got renewed for a fourth and final season.

Excelling in all the important domains of acting, writing, and direction, the series has received 32 Primetime Emmy Award nominations including two for Outstanding Drama Series. Bateman won for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2019 while Julia Garner won twice consecutively for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2019 and 2020. Bateman also received two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actor – Television Series Drama.

The Queen’s Gambit | Period-Drama

What do you get when you add drug and alcohol dependency to a classic Indian boardgame? A bonafide success in the form of an OTT show called The Queen’s Gambit. This coming-of-age drama based on Walter Tevis's 1983 novel of the same name, is Netflix's most-watched scripted miniseries four weeks after its release in October 2020.

Written and directed by Scott Frank, who created it with Allan Scott, the show follows the life of Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), an orphaned chess prodigy on her rise to the top of the chess world in the mid-1950s and 1960s.

The show received critical acclaim particularly towards Taylor-Joy's performance and the cinematography and production values. If gripping stories, tight plot-lines and brilliant acting are your choice of poison, take the plunge.
