Alex Grant - My Paintings Are A Reflection Of Human Duality, The Battle Between One's Inner Self And Outer Persona (Artist)

Alex Grant

Every piece is an emotional battle riding both pride and disappointment. When I feel an improvement in my techniques, this is what usually triggers a sense of accomplishment. Therefore, the last piece I have worked on is usually the one I am the happiest about.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I was born in Quebec City, Canada. I was always fascinated by drawing and painting. As a teenager, I went to art school but then spent a few years just doodling for fun.

In 2012, I suffered a heart Attack and it forever changed how I see the world. After that, my entire life was all about Art and how to channel my creativity,

2.Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?

Recovering from my heart attack did inspire me to focus on developing my visual voice, my oil paintings now offer a graphic quality combined with traditional portrait techniques.

I created an analogue Glitch Art style by using patterns, duplication of elements,  symmetry and image superposition as key elements of my imagery. My paintings are a reflection of human duality, the battle for self-definition between one's inner self and outer persona.

3. Is there any artwork that you are most proud of?

Every piece is an emotional battle riding both pride and disappointment. When I feel an improvement in my techniques, this is what usually triggers a sense of accomplishment. Therefore, the last piece I have worked on is usually the one I am the happiest about.

4.What is your dream project?

Would love to do more collaborative with other creative minds such as designers, sculptors or public art curators. Collaborating with other incentives spirits is always a very fulfilling experience.

5. Who is your favorite designer and why?

I am not sure I have a specific designer in mind, however, I am certainly attracted to maximalism when it comes to fashion, with a hint of vintage.

6. Do you have any tips for people who want to join this field?

Just create like it is your job. Book the hours, commit to the lifestyle and always push yourself even when the mood doesn't initially trigger inspiration.
