Alex Treviño - It Is Easier For Me To Understand Things When I Write Or Draw Them (Visual Artist)

Alex Treviño

I am very grateful to my parents who nurtured those interests and got me into multiple painting and robotics classes, that made my love for those two subjects grow over time.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Since I was very young I loved to paint and also liked the computer very much, at that time I had a Commodore 64 at home. I am very grateful to my parents who nurtured those interests and got me into multiple painting and robotics classes, that made my love for those two subjects grow over time.

When the time came to study a career, I decided on architecture but realized that this was not what I wanted to do with my life. It took me a while to understand that one could live from the arts, but when I achieved that, it was a great feeling of satisfaction.

2. How and when did you realize your passion for visual arts?

I realized that doing artistic things like a painting, made time go by very quickly, and I had a lot of fun. But when I grew up, I tried to have different normal jobs and none of them fulfilled me, I was constantly quitting them, and I felt bad about it.

After trying a lot of different jobs I entered a film company and realized that drawing, painting, sculpting and anything artistic related would make me feel fulfilled, and that's how I found out what my passion was.

3. What has been the biggest learning from your career?

That we are part of a society and it is very important to understand it. By being able to share with more people what you do, it is much easier to live out your passion.

4. Describe your favourite visual effect from a movie. Why do you like it?

When the city is unfolded in the film Inception it is one of my favourite visual effects, because it is something unexpected and exciting at the same time.

5. What do you think is the best method to review visuals for corrections? And what is your favourite software to work with?

What I do is make a copy of the project and draw over what I think is missing. As a visual artist, it is easier for me to understand things when I write or draw them.
My favourite software is Blender to make 3D, Substance to make textures and Photoshop to do the postproduction.

6. What is the one piece of advice that you would give to aspiring visual artists?

Invest time in your passion. Take classes in what interests you most. Look for the best hardware to develop your ideas. Living from your passion is possible even if your family and friends believe it is not.
