Erika Kikola - I've Always Been Drawn to Old Houses, and Unique Furnishings (Interior Designer)

Erika Kikola

I'm a creative being, so I started channeling my artistic energy into our home...and eventually realized, woah, I'm kinda good at this!

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I'm a stay at home mom/budding designer. I initially went to cosmetology school. I worked in the field for a few years then quit to stay at home with my daughter.

We bought a 1917 fixer upper and have slowly diy renovated it ourselves. I'm a creative being, so I started channeling my artistic energy into our home...and eventually realized, woah, I'm kinda good at this!

2. When did you first discover your interest in home decor?

When I was a kid! I still remember the interiors of homes I visited. I've always been drawn to old houses, and unique furnishings.

3. How would you describe your style and aesthetics?

Bold, Colorful, Eclectic, Glam with a Vintage touch.

4. What is the thought process before selecting any furniture or items?

Hmmm quality is a big one, with 2 kids I need things that are going to hold up. Can I purchase this second hand? I try to thrift as much as possible.

Also, I think about if it's something we can display in our home for years and years to come. I try to avoid super trendy things.

5. Who is your favorite interior designer and Why?

Dorothy Draper, her use of color and pattern is everything.

6. How do you keep yourself inspired and motivated?

I draw inspiration from the typical resources (Pinterest, instagram), set design in TV (Ratched, the Queens Gambit lately). Also fashion! I've always been a snazzy dresser and I like to think I look like I belong in my home.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

Goodnight Moon. Silly, but both of my kids love it and the illustrations heavily influenced my living room design.
