Anaïs Gonzalez - I Would Describe My Style as Quick and Breezy, and I Think That's What Some People Like About It (Artist)

Anaïs Gonzalez

I've always known drawing was my passion because I draw since I can remember. I never thought about stopping so I just continued my life doing what I like the most. I studied what was best for me, and I also had those platforms to share my art, so I had no reasons to quit.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I started drawing when I was a kid. At the age of 11 I began to take drawing seriously till today. Once I discovered social media I started posting some of my drawings on Instagram. It started as a personal account but it ended up being an art account in not so long.

At the moment, around 2016, I had already a community of people who liked my fanarts. But it wasn't until 2018 that I began to post again with a different style, because I was tired of the realism and spending too much time on the same drawing. Once I discovered I could draw quickly my drawings turned into sketches and that's when so many people discovered me on social media.

2. What inspired you to pursue art?

I've always known drawing was my passion because I draw since I can remember. I never thought about stopping so I just continued my life doing what I like the most. I studied what was best for me, and I also had those platforms to share my art, so I had no reasons to quit.

3. How would you describe your style and aesthetics?

I would describe my style as quick and breezy, and I think that's what some people like about it. At the same time I work from realism, but not to the point that it looks too finished. Although I love that style too, I developed to what I do now.

4. Why do you specifically use pencils to create your art?

I've always done it that way. I learned from that and now I control that material a lot. Although when I started sketching I changed my regular pencils to mechanical, and that was a big change. But I still use regular ones.

5. What impact do you want to create through your art?

I'm happy with what I'm doing at the moment, working for myself and at the same time trying to help/inspire others as much I do from other artists too. I don't feel the need to be successful or be in a museum, if I can live from my work and be happy that's what matters.

6. How do you overcome a creative block?

I don't have the key to overcome an artist block, but it's happened to me a lot, especially with social media. That's why I learned to respect and listen to myself. Creative blocks are normal and we have to deal with them.

Trying to change it just makes us anxious and feel we're not doing things right, and that's not true. We need space sometimes, and we can focus on how great the comeback will be.

7. Which artist has inspired you the most and why?

I have tons of artists that inspire me. Especially nowadays, with platforms such as Instagram, there's art everywhere. But since I started studying art I've fallen in love with academic painting such as Velazquez, Goya or Rubens. I would say that's always been my biggest inspiration since the beginning. I just wanted to be like them and do what they did my own way.

8. What tips and advice would you give to aspiring artist?

The first thing I would say and the most important, listen to yourself first. Choose what makes you happy, it doesn't matter if you can’t make a job of it right away. What matters is your happiness and love for what you do.

And I would also say social media is a great way to share your art with others and be able to have wonderful opportunities. I really recommend to use them, but don't take it too seriously, because they doesn't make you a better artist.

9. Which is your favourite book and why?

Sadly I've never used an art/drawing book before to learn from it, if that's what the question is about. But I would recommend the book La Sed written and illustrated from a spanish artist called Paula Bonet. Although I'm not sure if the book it's also in english you would love her illustrations.
