1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I’m a lifestyle and landscape photographer from Nuremberg in beautiful Bavaria, Germany. Photography started as a hobby at a very young age, soon turned into passion and even obsession, and today I would even consider myself a nerd on the never-ending hunt after the latest technologies and constantly trying to push the boundaries of my own style.

In 2016, I became a freelance photographer, had my first commercial campaigns, and started my journey on social media, most importantly Instagram, where I regularly post as @Formgestalter.

2. How and when did you realize your passion for photography?

I basically “inherited” this passion from my father who was a passionate photographer himself and started to take me on hikes when I was little. Through him I developed my love for being outdoors, for discovering beautiful places and for capturing the magic they convey on cam.

3. What are some tips you would like to share with amateur photographers?

First of all, practice practice practice. The more you try, the better, and the sooner you will find your own style. Learn the basics such as focusing and exposing. There is nothing worse than a blurry picture.

Take advantage of those special hours of the day in the early morning and before sunset that add some magic dust to any picture. And here is one from my signature toolbox - Play with “layering" by using a foreground, subject and background. These layers create an interesting touch by almost pulling the viewer deeper into the picture and even telling a whole story.

4. What are the important skills one should have to be a successful photographer?

You need artistic skills to recognize a beautiful subject or frame. You need some basic technical skills to capture high quality shots and edit them into compelling images. You need patience to wait for that perfect moment. And you need passion to never stop trying and evolving.

5. What are various opportunities available for aspiring photographers?

Best is to find a niche based on one’s talent and passion. This can range from portrait, to travel to commercial to stock photographer. Aspiring photographers can start as free lancers and should focus on building a network.

Social media offer a great opportunity to potentially reach many, but certainly there is a lot of competition out there. Lastly, in today’s digital world there are many transferable skills between photography and graphic design and art direction, so there are some interesting opportunities, too.
