If you want to model—or make any kind of art—do it for the right reasons. Don’t do it just for attention and approval. Not only will you lose yourself, you’ll be easily taken advantage of and everyone will see through you. Build beautiful things and strong relationships with people who prove they can be trusted.

1. Tell us about your background and journey?

I grew up very fast and my path was a difficult one to say the least. I operate at a healthier pace these days.

2. What inspired you to become a model?

Nothing glamorous or artistic, I was 16 and needed money. The work became steadier, and eventually grew into a creative outlet. The more control I exerted over myself, the more I could bring to my work, actually managing shoots and other collaborations.

3. You have very different concepts in your photoshoots. How do you come up with these?

I just like to tell stories and play dress up.

4. What are your tips to stay fit and healthy?

Eat whatever makes you happy. Run around outside. Maintain your freedom.

5. What is the most challenging part of being a model?

Honestly, I don’t consider myself a “model” anymore. The majority of my work is creative direction. The word “model” reminds me of the Russian girls who taught me to swallow cotton balls so I wouldn’t feel the pangs of starvation during my dalliance with an agency in Tokyo.

6. Do you have any experience with criticism, if so, how do you overcome it?

Of course. You’ve got to be able to absorb it, and to dish it out. Frankly, but fairly. And not just to others. No one criticizes me harder than myself.

7. Who is your favourite model and why?

Peter Steele in the August 1995 issue of Playgirl. The piece speaks for itself.

8. What message would you give to aspiring models and our readers?

If you want to model—or make any kind of art—do it for the right reasons. Don’t do it just for attention and approval. Not only will you lose yourself, you’ll be easily taken advantage of and everyone will see through you. Build beautiful things and strong relationships with people who prove they can be trusted.

Maintain an open mind and a a thick skin. Clarify to yourself early on what you’d like to share with the world. Be proud of your work, and if you are fortunate enough to have that work noticed, keep your feet firmly planted on the ground and use your platform to set a positive example to others. Be that rarest of rare humans - one with a heart as beautiful as their art.

9. Which is your favourite book and why?

D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley's Lover. We should all be so lucky to scandalize the world with unutterable beauty.
