Advina Ratnaningsih - The Fashion Industry Should See the Beauty of Many Races That the World Has (Multiple Awards Winning Model)

Advina Ratnaningsih

Everything is about the power of mind. When we have positive thoughts, we will have a healthy mind. And a healthy mind can manage us to do more healthy activities. I do exercises regularly 3-5 times a week. Hiking and trekking to the mountain is one of my favorite exercises besides yoga, boxing and F45.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

My background is in fashion. I've been working as a professional model for almost 18 years. I do mostly fashion shows and many photoshoots for campaigns, catalogue, magazine and also do some tvcs. I used to travel to a few countries and different cities in Indonesia for fashion shows and photoshoots.

Along with my career, since the last 10 years, I have traveled more than before. In the beginning it was because I travel for my modeling work, but then I am enjoying traveling more and more, so now I travel a lot to many places on different occasions (besides modeling work) just because I love to explore new things.

2. What fascinates you about travelling and how did you develop your interest in photography?

I love traveling because I love the feeling when I'm in a new place. The excitement to see new things, to see other cultures, to feel the atmosphere, to act like a local, and to have new friends along the journey.

I always love taking photos with my camera. I take photos of anything I think it's beautiful and interesting. And when instagram was invented in its first year, I used instagram as my platform to share beautiful/interesting photos that I took with my phone.

And I used to have a small community here called iphonesia, that allowed us to share photos that inspired others and encouraged us to take more nice photos. I have a best friend called Fajar that is always there to show me what to do and what not to do with the camera during our photos hunting.

Since then, I use my instagram to share my travel photos to inspire other travelers, or just to show that we live in a beautiful world, and I also share some of my portfolio from my modeling career too on instagram.

3. What inspired you to pursue modelling as a career?

When I was kid, I never dreamt of being a professional model like what I am now. And then when I was 13 years old, I saw an advertisement about Elite Model Look competition in the magazine. I applied just for fun. And I went through the national competition and became one of the finalists.

Then I continued again when I was in college. I joined the modeling school and from there I got the contract of the agency, I applied for Wajah Femina 2005 competition as finalist, one of the famous modeling competitions that time and since then my door was wide open in modeling until now.

For me it's a really fun job. You get paid for posing in front of cameras or walking on runways. Quite easy money too. And I met many new people in the fashion world. Some of them turned to become my best friends and family. And plus, I could travel around the world also because of my modeling work. So it's a bonus for me and i really love my jobs

4. What is your idea or mantra for staying fit and healthy?

Everything is about the power of mind. When we have positive thoughts, we will have a healthy mind. And a healthy mind can manage us to do more healthy activities. I do exercises regularly 3-5 times a week. Hiking and trekking to the mountain is one of my favorite exercises besides yoga, boxing and F45.

I am also a vegetarian, and I choose my food carefully (but can't resist chocolate). I don't smoke, I don't drink soda, but I drink alcohol for special occasions. I drink lots of water and eat more fruits daily.

5. What changes do you wish to have in the modelling industry?

When I did modeling in Milan in 2014, all the clients those times loved caucasian models more than asian models. Not too easy to get some jobs for other than caucasian models. To see now asian models and different races models are more appreciated than before makes me happy.

I meant that the fashion industry should see the beauty of many races that the world has. Not just glued on 1 race only. The diversity is more beautiful to see. In my own country, there are still a lot of advertisements that show that the pretty girl must have fair skin, straight hair, slim and tall. But Indonesia itself has so many cultures and races.

We have more than 17 thousand islands and most of each island has different cultures and for sure different types of people. I want to break the stigma about that. Everyone is beautiful, no matter how dark your skin is, curly or straight, slim or curvy, you are beautiful no matter what.

And I hope the discrimination about that stopped soon. And I hope the fast fashion can be reduced for the sake of the earth's environment. It breaks my heart to see how much the textile garbages from the fast fashion industry. I hope people are more conscious about what they buy or wear.

6. Which model do you admire the most and why?

I always love to see Kate Moss and Fahrani, one of the famous Indonesian models. Why Kate Moss because I think she was the role model that time and always admire her works and her photos.

And why Fahrani, because she is a very pretty Indonesian Model, even though now she has so many tattoos on her body with the unique haircut, she is still beautiful in her own way because she has her own characters and makes her even more unique than other models.

7. What tips and advice would you give to aspiring models?

Be confident about yourself, don't compare yourself to others because everyone has their own journey and pace of time to become who they are. Find your own characters because that's what makes you unique. Don't act who you are not. And never give up. It might be a long process but you will learn a lot on the way there. And stay fit and take care of your body.

 8. Which is your favorite book and why?

I always reread 'The Happiness Project' when I have time. Just a little reminder to myself that I don't need to change my life drastically to change for better, all small simple daily actions can make me happy, and to make other people happy will make my life happier.
