Tell us
more about your background and journey.
I'm an artist, designer and creative from Sydney, Australia. I grew up loving art and creating, and always knew I wanted my career to reflect that. To be honest I thought I was gonna work for Disney.
Despite all that, it wasn't until my mid-twenties when I finally gained the courage to start my freelance design business part-time, while I worked my day job in retail. After a few years, art eventually became my full-time job. And that's where I'm at now!
When did you decide you wanted to be an illustrator?
I always loved art and knew it was my path, but fear got in the way and I didn't really make the decision until a couple years ago when I finally bit the bullet and gave it a shot.
Is it a financially stable career?
It can be! For me it is. I've been lucky enough to work with some major brands, which I think has helped sustain my momentum (and support my pricing). You really have to believe in yourself and put your all into it in order to succeed.
Who is your favourite illustrator and why?
My favourite artist of all time is James Jean -- His work is beautiful. Very detailed, surreal and ethereal. Beautiful colours and gorgeous lines!
Where do you get inspired from to create art?
I get inspired by a lot of things; fashion, faces, patterns, nature. Other artist and projects, photographs, sculptures. There's inspiration everywhere!
What does your typical day look like?
I have an at-home studio, so I'm pretty lucky. Usually I'll wake up 9ish (I'm not a morning person), have my morning coffee while catching up on socials, twice a week I'll then head to the post office to send out customer deliveries and run errands, then when I'm back it's work time til I feel satisfied -- Usually thats until somewhere between 6pm-10pm. I'm trying to get better at work/life balance.
What piece of advice would you like to give to future aspiring
illustrators?
Just do you and believe in yourself. If you don't, no-one else will!
Which is your favourite book and why?
I have a lot of favourites! I really like anything scientific or spiritual -- My all-time faves include 'Cosmos' by Carl Sagan and 'The Elegant Universe' by Brian Greene. I love them because they give you perspective on where you sit in reality and all of existence, they've both made me feel more connected to and inspired by everything around me.
