Charlotte Posner - Everything You Need Is Around You, It’s About Getting on With It and Going for It (Artist)

Charlotte Posner

Having been encouraged to draw and paint from an early age by my parents, I went on to work with oil paint at the age of 14 and eventually graduated from Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design. Passion and hard work are certainly important ingredients for the recipe to success, but I struck a special chord with audiences online in 2013 when I designed a few very famous characters that have set apart from other aspiring artists.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Ah, yes my Posner Pop Dolls! I painted five women (my lucky number) and gave them ice-cream cone bodies with ice-cream flavour heads and the reaction on social media was overwhelming. I began to design dolls for high end brands and I would get in touch with them personally through Twitter.

They all reposted the work, and suddenly I had requests from more brands to create bespoke dolls for them. From there, the appeal of my dolls just grew and grew. In October 2018, The Charlotte Posner Collection launched exclusively with Brown Thomas in Dublin. The Charlotte Posner collection came into existence thanks to a meeting between me and entrepreneur Lady Jeanne Davies.

The dynamic duo met thanks to our mutual love of art, Jeanne having seen me on a TV program about the Royal Academy of Art's Summer Exhibition. With our team of talented, like-minded women, together we launched 'Charlotte’s gifting collection'.

2. What inspired you to pursue art?

I have always loved art from a young age. I am always creating, drawing and painting. I get inspired from people, places and things around me. Everything you need is around you, it’s about getting on with it and going for it. Getting stuck in and get started.

3. What design process do you follow before starting a project?

It totally depends on the project, when working on my own artwork I am spontaneous and just let things flow. Other times my projects are planned out with briefs and this can take slightly longer, especially with larger corporate companies with more people involved.

I would work with each client until we get to the final project together, step by step. We always have creative freedom and all my work gets approved before we press play. All the collaborations are great and work so well. I really enjoy working with people as a team to see our visions merge together.

4. Which themes attract you the most?

Playful and colourful themes.

5. How did your designs and artworks evolve?

They start with a drawing then they grow into paintings and larger artworks. Graffiti is on a blank wall. I draw things out beforehand and then I start to render the works.

6. Who is your favourite artist and why?

I love so many it's so hard to choose. I really love 1800 art, where they used to mix paint from scratch and spend hours to years on painting the artworks, building up the layers of oil paint.

7. What message would you give to aspiring artists?

Just start, keep going and don’t stop. Don’t give up. Even if you have a full time job that’s not being an artist you can still create, just make time for it.

8. Which is your favourite book and why?

At the moment it’s how to draw mapping and fantasy landscapes. I also really like science and quantum physics and I listen to current affairs podcasts. I love listening to music whilst drawing.
