Diana Chan - A Malaysian Born, Australian Cook and the Winner of MasterChef Australia Season 9

After 4 years of working in Deloitte, I wanted to pursue my passion of making a career in food and went on to compete in MasterChef Australia's 9th season, a decision which has changed my life and cemented my determination to embrace food as much as possible.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I started in the corporate world in accounting and after 5 years I decided to join the Masterchef Australia competition. I've never looked back since then and it is a dream to be able to do what I love everyday. Doesn't make it seem like work at all.

2. What led you to take up cooking?

I've grown up in a household with amazing food. Both parents are great cooks and so naturally I learnt a lot from them. Since winning the Masterchef competition, I took the leap to make it my career and 4 years on, I am still enjoying it.

3. What does your typical day look like?

My day varies from day to day. Not one day is the exact same which keeps it exciting but also a little harder to manage. I have to be super flexible with my schedule in order to win work. Some days I'm inundated with work and others I can have coffee catch ups 5 times a day! Haha

Although, having said that a couple of things remains for me. I check in on work everyday and make sure I fit in at least an hour of exercise each day.

4. How did you feel about winning Master Chef?

It's the best feeling. I could never have imagined taking out the whole competition. I am highly competitive but winning the competition has made me so sure of my decisions and backing myself.

5. Does one's approach change when cooking professionally and at home?

Yes absolutely. I can cook really delicate and dainty looking food when I'm serving others, but when I'm at home it's more homely and soulful. The dishes are heartier and less fussy.

6. Is there a dish you particularly associate yourself with?

Lots of dishes but I think I love a dish called Assam Pedas the most. It ticks all the boxes for me. Good amount of chilly and tamarind for the sourness.

7. Can cooking be learnt at culinary schools or a natural talent is required?

I suppose both. There just needs to be a basic understanding of common knowledge involved as well. Cause in the real world, rarely do things go according to plan so you need to learn to troubleshoot.

8. Which is your favorite book and why?

Shoe Dog, it's the story of how Nike started. It's amazing to read Phil Knight's story and the troubles and challenges he faced to create a brand that is easily one of the most recognizable brands in the world. Truly inspiring!!!

9. What are your future plans?

To continue doing what I am doing, expand the business. Creating new products in the FMCG space and expanding on the dumplings.

Also, I've a new project in home wares. I love entertaining friends and it's a no brainer really. I also love media so will continue to showcase my knowledge through the screens!
