DJ Mandy - I Want to Set up My Own Label as a Female DJ

During the festival summer, you often go from one gig to another one, sometimes you also need to take flights to play 1 gig abroad, even in different time zones and playing gigs at night meaning your biorhythm is totally fucked up. It’s not always the healthiest way of living; being on the road all the time, night shifts, I can tell you it’s not always a party & party!

Tell us about your background and journey.

I am Mandy, 23 Years young and I live in Ghent, Belgium. I started deejaying when I was 15 years old. I was discovered by my agency because I posted a set on SoundCloud which they like.

When I got signed with the agency, I got the chance to play in clubs, small events, local festivals. I have always liked being a DJ. In the beginning, you don’t really know what to expect or how the crowd will respond to your sets. But thanks to your fans you know why you enjoy it so much. It gives you goosebumps when you see the crowd going crazy, screaming your name, how I miss that!

In the last 2 years I really had the chance to play at the coolest festivals around the globe; Tomorrowland, Reverze, World Club Dome, Parookaville (Germany), Dream beach (Spain), Electrobeach (France), Dreamfields (Mexico)! It’s really amazing and I feel blessed to live my dream.

Is DJ'ing a mainstream and financially stable career in India yet?

This is a difficult question as she has never been to India before. She doesn’t have any Indian Dj colleagues she knows. Maybe you can tell us whether this is a stable career in India yet. Curious to know

Who is your favourite artist and why?

My old-time favourite “Coone”! Because I have been a big fan of him since I was a little kid. You could say he is my “big example” in the scene and an artist I look up to. I like his music as it has many emotions and of course, I like the kicks.

For me, his music has always been my perfect getaway when I was younger. I would play his tracks, pump up the volume and just stopped thinking about everything else; enjoying those kicks and act crazy for a while. Just me & those beats! And that’s what I also love when I’m playing my own sets.

What are some of the common myths about your profession?

That it’s only a man’s world as many people seem to believe that woman don’t know how to DJ or deejaying wouldn’t fit as a woman’s profession.

Some people also think that being a DJ is not a difficult or hard job. It so much fun going from one party to another one they say. Who wouldn’t love to be a DJ? But it’s so much more than that.

During the festival summer, you often go from one gig to another one, sometimes you also need to take flights to play 1 gig abroad, even in different time zones and playing gigs at night meaning your biorhythm is totally fucked up. It’s not always the healthiest way of living; being on the road all the time, night shifts, I can tell you it’s not always a party, party.

How and from where can one gain formal training for being a DJ?

I learned how to DJ by listening to a lot of music, practising at home with a friend, watching Youtube video’s and practising over and over.

Putting my playlists together with my favourite tracks and play what I love to play. When you enjoy what you are doing, you are eager to learn and to improver yourself.

What are the kind of opportunities you get after being a DJ?

I would like to do something in the music scene; like setting up my own label as a female Dj’s.

What message would you give to people who want to make their passion their profession?

It might be cliché, but “Never give up”! If you really want something, you need to believe in yourself and go for it. You will encounter ups & downs, not everybody will like you, your performance or your music. But keep in mind that you cannot please everyone.

Certainly, with all social media, likes & dislikes it might be difficult to let go of all the comments you get or don’t get. And that’s also something you have to put aside. Make sure to do what you love to do and don’t change this because you want to please others.

Stay true to yourself otherwise, you might get lost and not enjoy living your dream. You need to work hard for what you want, but in the end, it will give you great satisfaction.

Which is your favourite book and why?

To be honest I don’t read books haha! The only book I like to read is a cookbook.
