The newly appointed Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Tirath Singh Rawat, expressed his deep concerns over the youth embracing ripped jeans as a fashion statement. He condemns the wave of westernization that has gripped India and is skeptical about boys and particularly girls, showing their knees through their ripped attire.
Should jeans, ripped
or otherwise define a person?
Is such public
condemnation of choice of apparel by an official in such a high position
justified?
This public
condemnation of an individual’s choice is a threat to our democracy and the
principles of tolerance. The unnecessary attention this statement commands is
taking away from the graver issues that our country is faced with.
The real question
arises. Does the CM really care about Indian culture and embracing the ethos or
is he just threatened by the bold and audacious women of today who are set to
break-free from the ties that have been holding them down all along?
Long gone are the
days of patriarchy. No longer are women required to blindly comply with their
male counterpart. Women are now breaking the glass ceiling be it with or
without men. Their courage and valor are showcased through their newly earned
attitudes and personalities. They no longer shy away from positions of power
instead they take on all leadership roles that come their way.
Contouring his real
narrow mindedness by using a ludicrous excuse of westernization governing the
Indian youth, Tirath Singh Rawat, yet another politician is trying to impose
age old ideologies which have been done away with long ago.
The statement is
nothing but evidence of the age-old prejudice that we have against matching
personalities, behaviors and dispositions with clothing. Even in the age of
inclusion and acceptance, we find ourselves clinging onto theories of choice of
clothing defining a person.
The youth of the
today is all about taking independent decisions, standing up for their rights
and raising their voice against any such outlandish practices. Instead of
propagating liberalization, exchange of new ideas and widening horizons, the
politicians of our country are promulgating the ideas that will grip and
entrench India in a doom.
On a lighter note, there’s
a possibility of another perspective here, the CM of Uttarakhand just like the those
in the other states may want to latch onto a controversial topic, in order to
command greater media coverage right from the first week in office.
We, as aware
individuals of India must always strive for righteousness around us and as for
the CM’s, they must dive deep into the governance of their states and not let
their thoughts “rip” up the Independent, Inclusive and Liberal India.
