Dr. Kanishka L. Hall - I Want To Give Young Brown Girls Hope That Their Dreams Are Possible (Author & Anesthesiologist)

Not just in my career but in life I want to be a beacon of hope. I want to give young brown girls hope that their dreams are possible. I want to give my patients hope that there will better health and better days ahead.

Tell us about your background and journey.

I am the youngest child of a close family unit. My parents were big advocates for education. I had a great deal of encouragement to seek higher education and always go for my dreams. I didn't actually know I wanted to be a doctor until after travelling abroad on a research fellowship in Japan.

There I witnessed the importance of both the clinical sciences and the physician-patient relationship.

How important is a super specialization for doctors?

I am not sure it is important at all. This current global pandemic really shined a light on the needs of frontline physicians, public health experts, and scientists.

A great deal of over-specialized physicians found that they were needed in primary care, emergency medicine, and critical care. Even my speciality was called upon to uses our special skill sets in a new capacity outside of the operating room.

What is your take on virtual methods of providing treatment?

Telemedicine, or virtual care, is an important weapon in our arsenal to combat access to care, especially in disenfranchised populations.

What makes a good doctor?

A good doctor never stops learning and knows when to ask for help. A good doctor is a caring doctor.

Which countries are the best for studying medicine?

As I mentioned before I was inspired to enter the field of medicine while travelling abroad. There is no better country to practice medicine because research has proven the patient outcomes are improved when treated by physicians who both share and empathize with unique cultural norms.

Which is your favourite book and why?

My current favourite book is the one I am attempting to write because I believe everyone has a story to tell. My favourite author Toni Morrison said, "If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it."

What impact do you want to create in the medical field?

Not just in my career but in life I want to be a beacon of hope. I want to give young brown girls hope that their dreams are possible. I want to give my patients hope that there will better health and better days ahead.

I want to give my fellow healthcare workers hope that all of our hard work is not in vain. I want to give everyone hope that there is more love than hate, more light than darkness, and more good days than bad days.
