Ellen Kern

I completed the 100 days of makeup challenge and kept going for 200+ days, which kickstarted learning so many new makeup techniques. I fell in love and I've come to really enjoy the challenge of fine detail work, it allows me to slow down and focus on makeup as my safe space. It truly has become my favorite form of art and self expression.

1. Tell us about yourself and your journey.

My name is Ellen, I'm a 24 year old creative makeup artist and Instagram content creator currently based in Seattle, Washington. 3 years ago I struggled with an autoimmune disease that left me unable to work and the boredom led to discovering the creative beauty world on Instagram. I was amazed and wanted to learn how to create like these makeup artists I was seeing online.

2. Why did you choose this career?

I'm an artsy person by nature, so being able to create with makeup has been a relieving outlet for that creative fulfilment. I've always loved technology as well so doing what I am now seems like the perfect combination of those things.

Since I was young and found YouTube I grew up watching makeup creators in this space, and it's always been a career I've aspired to have because of the freedom of self expression it allows. Also in an ideal world where we can travel, you can create and upload from anywhere!

3. How can one build a clientele as a makeup artist?

My experience isn't building a personal clientele since my work is all online, but I would say practice as much as you can, on whoever, and market yourself online. There are hashtags for different areas like '#SeattleMUA' that help a lot. I think anyone has the ability to get great at something they set their mind to, so commit and keep reaching for your goals.

I would also suggest finding friends in the makeup community. For me that has been a huge blessing because I've found some of my best friends through makeup! But also having someone in the same field who completely understands is super helpful, and you can network together.

4. What are some of your top makeup tips?

I definitely suggest always taking pictures of your work! Even if it's not to post anywhere, pictures are so helpful for yourself to look and see how and where you can improve. It's also really fun looking back at years old photos and seeing the improvements. Beyond that - tutorials!

There's so much free information now on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube. You can learn everything online. The biggest tip is to always do what feels right for you. When it comes to makeup there are no right answers, it all comes down to personal preference so do the styles you like and other people will think it's cool too.

5. What kind of job opportunities can one get after becoming a makeup artist?

There's so many different fields you could go into with makeup! There's traditional local makeup artists, celebrity makeup artists, online content creators like myself, or you could start a business in the cosmetics field. I think it depends on what styles of makeup you excel in and what your goals are which fields you should explore.

6. What kind of professional courses would you suggest for aspiring  makeup artists?

I highly suggest looking into online creators for educational content. Find your favorite artists online and try to learn from them, there's often plenty of free tutorials, but some artists also offer more formal courses and classes you can pay to take.

When it comes to art, you truly don't need a certificate saying you graduated from a certain school, you need good work. Because the internet is the way information spreads fastest you can find the best, most current, updated techniques online.

7. What has been your biggest project/ the Proudest moment of your career?

There's been a lot of projects I'm so grateful to have been able to collaborate on! Each one is special to me. I have to say my proudest moment, and a big kickstart to my journey was being added to Anastasia Beverly Hills PR list.

Norvina, the company's President really gave me confidence early on that my work was good enough, and that I had potential in this industry. I'm forever grateful for her support and the opportunity that led me to.

My name is Ellen, I'm a 24 year old makeup artist and Instagram content creator currently based in Seattle, Washington. My favorite pieces to create are colorful, creative, often involving some kind of optical illusion mixed with glam eye looks. While my goal is always to improve my craft, I think the most important part about being any kind of artist is enjoying the process. I appreciate this journey and wherever it may take me!
