Gabrielle Stone - My Role In The Film Swell Was Most Challenging Apart From All My Other Films (Actress)

Gabrielle Stone

I think my most challenging role was in a film called Swell. It's a drama and was shot with a small crew as we road tripped from Santa Cruz to Oregon. Apart from the emotionally demanding material, the conditions in which we were shooting and the budget we were on were extremely strenuous. In the end, I feel like it only pushed out performances further. I'm still great friends with the woman who played opposite me in that film, and it's some of the work I'm most proud of.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I grew up in Los Angeles with both my parents working in the film and television industry. I had a pretty normal childhood until my father suddenly passed when I was six-years-old. After college I followed in my parents footsteps and started working as an actress.

In 2015 I began directing and fell in love with it. It wasn't until my personal life erupted in 2017 that my life and career path totally changed. After my husband's affair, divorce, and another failed attempt at love that prompted a solo journey to Europe, I wrote Eat, Pray, #FML that has become a best-seller reaching women around the world.

2. Did you ever think or dream of becoming an actress?

I of course always thought about it because I grew up on sets with my parents. It wasn't until I was eighteen when I did my first film that I realized I had a true passion for it. Acting for me became a way to not only release my own emotions as a form of therapy, but also a way to help others heal through what they see on screen.

3. What are the challenges you face and how do you overcome it?

I feel like my biggest challenge was by far 2017. When my father died I developed a fear of abandonment which was massively triggered when I found out about my then husband's affair. The love I found with the man after my marriage convinced me to join him on a month-long trip to Italy.

Forty-eight hours before getting on the plane he decided he needed to go by himself and broke up with me. It was then that I had to decide to face my biggest fears head on. I chose to go, face my fears of abandonment, and learn to truly love myself. That journey has now turned into a book, podcast, and following of FMLers that have truly resonated and healed with my journey.

4. What are your current and upcoming projects?

I'm currently writing the sequel to Eat, Pray, #FML and putting out the podcast FML Talk every Wednesday. During quarantine I co-directed my third film, Stay Home. I plan to be behind the camera again soon, as well as back in front when I find something that sparks my passion.

5. What are your takeaways from your career?

My career has grown and changed over the years but my biggest takeaway is to run toward anything that sets your soul on fire. It wasn't until I opened myself up to more than just acting that really brought my soul so much fulfillment.

It is imperative in this life to always be open to what the Universe may bring you. I am a true believer that everything happens for a reason, and I am a walking example of that.

6. Tell us your experience of working in the film industry and some of your films which was most challenging for you?

I think my most challenging role was in a film called Swell. It's a drama and was shot with a small crew as we road tripped from Santa Cruz to Oregon. Apart from the emotionally demanding material, the conditions in which we were shooting and the budget we were on were extremely strenuous.

In the end, I feel like it only pushed out performances further. I'm still great friends with the woman who played opposite me in that film, and it's some of the work I'm most proud of.

7. For a complete outsider with no inroads, what advice would you like to give?

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how dark it may seem or how grim things are, there is. And more often than not, the other side is absolutely beautiful. So keep going.

Gabrielle Stone

Gabrielle Stone is no stranger to the world of entertainment. Growing up on set with her legendary scream-queen mother, Dee Wallace (Cujo, E.T.), she had days of licking off mommy’s fake blood and watching behind the scenes movie magic. Seeing the world with mom and dad gave her the travel bug at an early age—until Gabrielle experienced a real-life horror when she lost her father suddenly at age seven.

After many years in the industry herself, Stone transitioned from meaty acting roles to writing and directing. Her award-winning films It Happened Again Last Night and After Emma gained her awards for writing, directing, and acting—but she had a bigger role in life that would soon present itself: freaking badass.

After the rug was vigorously pulled out from under her when her husband’s affair came to light, she found herself falling into the arms of another man. After a second failed attempt at love and a massive heartbreak, she decided that instead of landing flat on her ass—she’d make a career out of it.

And so came the birth of the book Eat, Pray, #FML, where she shared all the mistakes, all the lessons, and most importantly, how she became a fearless leader from it all.
