Surbhi Kaushik - A Photographer Needs to Have Complete Knowledge of Their Gear and the Way Light Works (Photographer)

"I became a travel and landscape photographer after discovering my love for nature and the beautiful places on our planet because I love nature, I capture it. One cannot happen without another and both happen because of each other. If as an outdoor photographer one is unable to connect with nature, they cannot have the vision for beauty which ultimately creates the results. Love, appreciation and respect for nature drives the results."

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I was born and raised in Gurgaon; and painting was my first love since childhood. I painted/exhibited the work actively till college ended and I always knew I had to be an artist.

After working for Gartner and Amazon for a few years I co-founded GoodShotz -- a photography learning company.

The last 5 years have been all about travelling around the world for those beautiful shots. It has been a very fulfilling journey so far for which I feel very grateful.

2. How and when did you realize your passion for photography?

The first memory I have of being attracted to photography is from when I was 6 years old. We were on a family vacation and all I wanted to do was borrow my dad’s camera and click everyone’s pictures.

But during childhood I found the creative freedom in painting. When I started working, love for painting evolved into love for photography and I purchased my first DSLR.

I was quite intrigued with the working of a camera, and using it to capture one's unique perspective. There was no looking back from there. The love for photography was here to stay.

Eventually, I also started traveling which introduced me to the world of limitless knowledge, creativity and freedom. This is when I knew travel / landscape photography was my thing.

3. What are some tips you would like to share with amateur photographers?

In today's world of social media inspiration comes in abundance and success is made to look easy. One can very likely lose sight of the most important goals. There is no substitute for in-depth knowledge of your art and it is very important to develop a solid foundation.

Finding your identity in a world of trends is essential. So my advice would be to not follow anyone but your true self, go out with your camera and practice a lot, never stop learning, and always enjoy what you do.

4. What are the important skills one should have to be a successful photographer?

A photographer needs to have complete knowledge of their gear and the way light works. That's a given fact.

Besides that upgrading not just the gear but knowledge is also very important.

One can be a successful photographer when they can visualize a shot and then be able to plan/execute it exactly as they visualized it.

5. Which is your favourite book and why?

My favourite book is 'Life of Pi' by Yann Martel. I also love the movie.

I love this one because it's a tale of survival against all odds, learning that being able to say 'goodbye' is also a privilege; and finally the lesson of letting go.

Two of my favourite quotes from the book are:

"I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye."

"You might think I lost all hope at that point. I did. And as a result I perked up and felt much better."
