Chathri Sahabandu - We Are Genuinely Focused on Promoting Sri Lanka as a Luxury Travel Destination Hence Our Travel Adventures Are Fully Funded by Us (Sri Lankan Travel Couple, Digital Creators)

Chathri Sahabandu

My husband and I are very much passionate about traveling and discovering new destinations, be it abroad or local. And with our corporate jobs, traveling whenever we get a holiday or even during the weekend became one of our favorite things to do and look forward to.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

We are a travel couple from Sri Lanka with 9-5 jobs in the Corporate World. And we have been traveling together since we tied the knot in February 2017.

I am a graduate of the University of London with a BSc in Economics and Management while my husband is a graduate of the University of Westminster with a BSc in Information Systems and Business. Both of us are also qualified in CIM (Charted Institute of Marketing).

We both worked for South Asia’s largest manufacturer of lingerie and one of Sri Lanka’s largest apparel manufacturers, MAS Holdings. And that is where we met.

Currently, we are working for the largest industrial catering firm in Sri Lanka which is called SuperServ and this happens to be a family business that was handed over to me and my husband by my father (we do have another business partner involved).

2. What led you to start your blog and what is it about?

My husband and I are very much passionate about traveling and discovering new destinations, be it abroad or local. And with our corporate jobs, traveling whenever we get a holiday or even during the weekend became one of our favorite things to do and look forward to.

This led to us exploring countless places in Sri Lanka as well as abroad. After a few months into it, I realized that we have so many pictures and experiences to share and why not open an Instagram account for all of that so someone could benefit from all the things we know about travel. And there began our journey on Insta as the Wandering Unicorns (@wandering_unicorns) and that was a good 3.5 years ago.

Our blog and website mainly focus on featuring luxury travel destinations in Sri Lanka and putting together travel guides and bucket list experiences from around the world. Due to Covid, the past year we have focused on featuring luxury travel destinations in Sri Lanka on our blog.

3. Is it financially sustainable to be a digital creator these days?

It is a difficult question to answer. We are genuinely focused on promoting Sri Lanka as a luxury travel destination hence our travel adventures are fully funded by us. Having a corporate job with a stable income is what helps us to plan our travel adventures.

4. How can someone become a successful content creator?

This is easy. You have to do it for yourself and not to impress others. And enjoy while you are at it. Make memories that would last a lifetime. Make genuine and good quality content. Select what you want to be as a digital creator. Differentiate yourself from others and create content that is useful and impactful.

5. How and where do you find inspiration to churn out content?

There are a few accounts we have been following for a while now. They are @travel_a_little_luxe, @saltinourhair, @mycolofulworld, and @thetwobohemians. We find inspiration through their accounts and sometimes when you visit a place and you happen to love it so much, inspiration for creating content comes naturally.

6. Who is your favorite creator and why?

My favorite creator is @travel_a_little_luxe! She has differentiated herself so well and she creates amazing content that makes you want to hop on a plane and just go explore all of it. She has been my biggest inspiration throughout. Her account is what gave me the idea to differentiate ourselves from other local travel accounts.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

Easy peasy. It is definitely Harry Potter. I was such a Potterhead back in the day. I have always loved the idea of a magical world and it just so easily transports me to a world full of wonder. And wouldn’t it be so great if we all had the power to ‘apparate’ to any place we wanted to? Or even just fly on a broomstick to wherever.
