The impressionists for sure. I like that the paintings finally look like humans made them, with obvious brushstrokes and minimal blending. So much more emotion is drawn out of the viewer and a different, more painterly skill is needed.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I've always had the creative itch and was surrounded by art supplies as a kid.  While waiting for a semester abroad to start I picked up paint and played around, which then followed me to Argentina - where I purchased supplies and created large works while abroad. The seed had been planted.

After getting married in 2012 my husband quickly encouraged me to get serious about this painting thing and in 2014 I officially jumped on the Daily Painting movement with leaders Duane Kieser and Carol Marine. I've gotten so much better so much quicker and really found my 'nature' and own style in the daily painting habit.

2. How would you describe your art style?

I've been calling it 'modern impressionism',  Sarah Sedwick calls it 'loose realism', but definitely has big, bold, and loose brushstrokes as the key feature.

3. Which mediums do you usually work with and why?

I use house paints outdoor, water-based house paints after doing an Art in Public Places project with the city of Fort Collins. I loved using them so much I brought them into my studio. They're much more opaque than traditional acrylics and have a longer, more fluid drag on the brush. I also use Charvin acrylics from Jerry's Artarama and they are so yummy and rich!

4. Which is your favorite art movement and why?

The impressionists for sure. I like that the paintings finally look like humans made them, with obvious brushstrokes and minimal blending. So much more emotion is drawn out of the viewer and a different, more painterly skill is needed.

5. What message would you give to aspiring artists?

Have artists you admire and want to paint like, but don't make yourself depressed because you can't paint like them. Start today, commit to practicing, and you will get a style you love all your own. If it's not fun, don't do it.

6. Which is your favorite book and why?

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. A fantastic true story about an amazing woman's experience in a Nazi concentration camp. She makes Jesus' power so real and alive and it is so applicable for what's going on in the world today even.
