Franz Kafka was born on July 3rd ,1883 (Prague, Kingdom of Bohemia) and he died June 3rd 1924 at the age of 40 in Austria. His parents were Herman Kafka and Julie Kafka.

Some of his notable works are  Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis), Der Process (The Trial), DasUrteil (The Judgement), Das Schloss (The Castle), Betrachtung (Competition), Ein Hungerkünstler (A Hunger artist), Briefe an Felix(Letter to Felice). He is considered as the major figure of 20th century literature.

His work was influenced by realism , fantasy, alienation and anxiety. Style of writing was modern. He was born in a  German speaking middle class  family . He was the 4th child of his parents out of 6 and was the eldest. He had 2 brothers George and Heinrich and three sisters Gabriele(Ellie), Valerie(Valli) and Ottilie(Ottle).

His brothers died in infancy and his sisters died during World War II. After completing his academic education of law he joined as a full time insurance company. But during his academics he wrote hundreds of letters to his loved ones and including his father with whom he is not much comfortable.

Ottilie was his closest sister. He saw many phases of life in his short period of life. As his father described he was very selfish and Kafka's relationship with his  father was not good. On business days  his mother worked 12 hours each day while managing family business but was quite shy.

Hence, Kafka's childhood was very lonely. Most of his story is influenced by his own life situations and the problems he faced reflecting his life circumstances.

About the Book

This book shows a complete  picture of metamorphosis of physical and mental status. It shows a vivid picture of human's reality and produces a big satire on it. Middle man's life is full of unsolved problems but that doesn't mean they forget the value of life and lives.

We value our life until we have work power. No one will respond to you if you are unable to do work or are disabled physically or mentally.

This book consists of Gregor Samsa as a main character. He was a travelling salesman and the protagonist of this story. He hates his job but because of family financial crises he was still doing that job. He was the character who transformed into an insect.

Grete Samsa was his sister; she hates Gregor's transformation and usually misbehaves with him. Mr. Gregor's father does not have a good relationship with his son, he left him alone and broken.

His story is influenced by his real life. He was so close with her sister but after her marriage he was totally alone. The book has a fantastic flow and deals greatly with its characters.

Self-Analysis

I realize the bitter truth of this existing century. Humanity and philanthropy is not in existence or if there is any it is supposed to be suppressed, even in today's families. Anxiety and social pressure grab each individual scene and it is very dramatic which can't be justified. We socialise ourselves in this way.

The Bottom Line

"What happens to me? he thought. It wasn't his dream, a proper room although a little too small lay peacefully between it's four familiar walls. A collection of textile samples lay spread out on the table.

Samsa was a traveling agent salesman. And above it three hung a picture that he has recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice field frame."

"How about if he sleeps a little bit longer and forgets all the nonsense". He thought that was something he was unable to do because he was used to sleeping on the right and in his present state couldn't get into that position".

My rating for this book - 4.3 out of 5
