Polina Krutova - My Experience in Marker Sketching Brings Me the Title of Ambassador of Fine Colour Company in Russia (Artist from Russia)

Polina Krutova

My message for a young artist is to be careful of the inner voice and more critical. Nowadays is the better time for artists than several years ago. It is easier to find an audience and it is easier to find teachers. But the problem is not to go after the hopes and likes of your audience.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Well, I was an artist since I was born! When I was a child, I went to the art studio. We went to museums, painted fruits and did origami. It was a blessed time in my life. All my enthusiasm for art grew from the studio. After that was art school and Art University in the speciality "Graphic Arts", I developed as a book illustrator.

But then I changed my vector to graphic design. It was an interesting sphere for me. I worked in the design bureau as a designer of books and logotypes. After that was the time of ADS in my life. I was so successful I became an Art-director of a creative agency after a year of being a designer. My experience in advertising helps me to promote my work even now. I am very thankful for that crazy times in my life.

Finally, I returned to painting. I was one of the first "sketchers" in Moscow at the times than marker sketching raised popularity. My experience in marker sketching brings me the title of Ambassador of Fine Colour company in Russia. Nowadays I am practising in mixed technique.

I use watercolour, markers, colour pencils, collage and liners in my works. My main direction is portrait. And my special project is drawing on coffee cups.

2. What inspired you to pursue art?

I am inspired by the works of other artists. I like to go to exhibitions, museums. it is like fresh air for me. I also like to travel to different countries. I like to meet different people. they give me ideas for my arts.

3. What kind of themes inspires you and how would you define your art style?

My main direction is portrait. And I am inspired by people I meet in new countries and places. I am also a big fan of cinema. I like to depict actors and actress. My art style was defined in my graphic past. I love line, limited colours, black and white drawing.

4. What were the struggles of your career as an artist and how did you overcome them?

Artist's career always has struggles and fears. Fear to show my work, to declare my view was my first fear. But social network and positive interest from my friends and other artists helps me a lot. I had two personal expositions and after that, this fear was crushed.

The second problem is to have time for self-projects. Because I sometimes have a lot of work for clients. One good day I woke up, have coffee and tell all my clients, that I need a rest. And really good clients waited some time and are still with me. This period gives me time to concentrate on my style and progress. Now I am trying to keep some free time for the pure art of mine. Not for sale.

5. Which artist do you admire the most and why?

Now I am absolutely obsessed with the art of Egon Schiele. His monochromous art, his nervous manner of studying nature. The graphic is brilliant. Characters are so clear and pure. I love his manner. I really feel the drama in all his works.

6. What message would you give to budding artists?

My message for a young artist is to be careful of the inner voice and more critical. Nowadays is the better time for artists than several years ago. It is easier to find an audience and it is easier to find teachers. But the problem is not to go after the hopes and likes of your audience.

You need to listen to your inner voice and sense of style. Choose and find your way and your style. And if your success makes you crazy, you should ask your granny about your art. And when she says she doesn't understand it at all. It puts you back from the sky to the ground.

7. which is your favourite book and why?

My favourite book is "myths of ancient Greece". It was my first personal book in childhood. It had photos of ancient sculptures instead of illustrations. There were a beautiful human body, beautiful country, romantic and scary stories. Gods and humans were together in their fears, passions, mistakes and success. I love that times, their passion for beauty and harmony.
