Roger Bates - Photography Offers a Wealth of Opportunities (U.S Based Photographer)

As an avid hiker and backpacker, I travelled to many wilderness locations throughout the western United States and Canada eventually settling in northern California.

By then, my interest in photography had become a means for documenting my personal adventures.

Tell us about your background and journey.

My interest in creating visual art took hold in the early years of high school creating murals and wall art for special events at the school. It wasn’t until my freshman year at a mid-western university that photography firmly captured my attention.

Majoring in journalism with a minor in art, I became involved as a photojournalist for an underground news magazine covering the Vietnam Era ant-war movement. As the war came to an end, I decided to pack my bags and explore the western United States.

As an avid hiker and backpacker, I traveled to many wilderness locations throughout the western United States and Canada eventually settling in northern California.

By then, my interest in photography had become a means for documenting my personal adventures which continued through fatherhood and other pursuits.

How and when did you realize your passion for photography?

With my wife, Samantha, our shared interest in hiking and photography became a devotion dedicated to bringing the beauty and wonderment we found in nature to a visual form we could share with others. It was from that pursuit that Nature Trails Photography was conceived.

What are some tips you would like to share with amateur photographers?

The one thing I feel is most important is to follow your heart. Discover what gives you the most passion and pursue it – learn about it, follow similar work by others and then develop your own style. It’s an ongoing process that will continue to grow as your body of work grows.

The technical aspect of any medium is just as important to enable one to create the desired visual impact. Learn everything you can about photography in general and also what equipment you’ll be using.

Lastly, make every shot counts but don’t dismiss one that at first glance, seems less inspiring. Set it aside and then go back to it, whether that be a day later or months or longer – one's personal perspective does change and so can your feelings about an image’s potential.

What are the important skills one should have to be a successful photographer?

As with any art form, there are some basic rules that govern how the mind responds to an image. Composition is arguably at the top of that list and the Rule of Thirds is probably the most important. Learning how to focus attention on your image’s message is key. Know your gear, well.

Also, understand lighting – what the eye sees (or doesn’t see) is dependent on how the image is portrayed by the light. This applies to both natural and artificial lighting. Your camera’s capabilities and your editing skills enable the effects of lighting to make the most of color, tones, textures and detail.

Learn to use that effect to its fullest. Craft your own, personal style. This will help you stand out and get recognized.

This requires not only attention to detail when capturing the image, but also the care you take in the editing process. Whether the image is in color or black and white, one needs to develop the skill to bring out the detail, emotion and style you are trying to achieve.

What are various opportunities available for aspiring photographers?

Photography serves many purposes in today’s culture. The fine art market is probably the most difficult to break into. Commercial photography, from product advertising, architectural and real estate to portrait and wedding photography – all offer a wealth of opportunities.

To be successful, each requires a passion to be the best and the dedication to learn the market you want to succeed in.

Which is your favourite book and why?

Not an easy question! One of my most memorable was the “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey” - two books in a series by the Greek philosopher, Homer. I have always loved historical work and his writings are often regarded as the wellspring of Western literature.
