Sangeeta Singh - People, Emotions, Human Psychology & Business Administration Has Always Intrigued My Curiosity (HR Head-Essar Power Business Group)

I absolutely agree formal education and your qualification in your CV is not your life it does not define your value, moral, ethics it cannot be rationalized beyond a point.

Tell us about your background, journey and upbringing.

I have had the most fascinating childhood culmination of these four words diverse traverse explorer wanderer. Coming from a defence background have travelled extensively which has kept me grounded and rooted to the fundamental realities of life. Have gone through many ups & downs in personal & professional life which has only made me more stronger. As it is rightly said what cannot break you can only make you strong.

Currently, heading HR, Admin/IR & Security for the Power business and on the board of three companies, the journey has been a roller coaster ride but I enjoy the ride… I have always believed the true measure of a man is not how he behaves in moments of comfort & convenience but rather how he stands at times of controversy & challenges…

Challenges & managing crisis is what drives me and brings out my uniqueness in the world of sameness.

How did you narrow down on this profession?

People, Emotions, Human Psychology & Business administration has always intrigued my curiosity. The dots automatically got connected with the inner desire and landed me into a profession which is my passion.

It seems onboarding, even in 2021 is a long drawn out process behind the scenes. How do you envision this changing in the future?

Simplicity is the need of the hour. To simplify things is the most complex thing and same stands true in this digitised and tech savvy era. Any process cannot be simplified if the people are in a haste to deliver or just want to do a tick in the check box. Devil lies in the detail and only once it is understood & accepted the change can be simplified.

Google, Adobe and most MNCs have a strict policy around sharing ex-employee data. How can one approach background checks in this situation?

More than background checks it is the trust and relationship which an employee has build with the organisation matters. A robust database is of no use if not meaningfully used for application.

Studies today show that an organization can lose INR 10 lakh (~ $17,000) on average on a wrong hire or for hiring someone with a false degree. The only tried and tested way to prevent frauds is via a thorough background verification process. Download SpringVerify's e-book for a comprehensive guide to Employee Background Verification in India.

Several global companies have come out and thrown their support behind not needing a formal education. What is your opinion about this?

I absolutely agree formal education and your qualification in your CV is not your life it does not define your value, moral, ethics it cannot be rationalized beyond a point.

What advice do you have for aspiring HR professionals?

To be Humble, authentic and passionate about learning and doing good every day.

Which is your favourite book and why?

My favourite book is “The Difficulty of being Good” by Gurucharan Das because it talks about righteousness and the essence of Dharma of doing right and good everyday in ones life.
