In Malaysia, there are 2,000,000 Indians, with Tamils accounting for 90% of the population.
What is the reason for the widespread existence of Tamilians in Malaysia?
The Chola empire, one of the most important Tamil ruling dynasties, spread to Malaysia in the 2 nd century, and since then Malaysia was ruled by the powerful Chola Dynasty.
The Chola Dynasty is well-known for its fishing and overseas ventures, which is why they built strong and important ports all over Malaysia, which further attracted business opportunities and helped strengthened the economy.
Malaysia's first port, built under the reign of Rajendra Chola, enabled the country to take its first steps toward growth, with the development of secretaries, reforms, and participation in agricultural reforms.
The Cholans, as they were called, had contact with the Roman's too.
Many Tamils eventually settled in Malaysia. These Tamils immigrated mainly from Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. Later, Tamil men married Malay women (Malaysian women) for business purposes. They were later referred to as Malay Tamils.
Role of the British Rule In India
When India was governed by the British, the Sri Lankans and Tamilians were transported to Malaysia to work on construction projects of roads and bridges.
The British governments plan was to tap the unexplored potential of Malaysia by converting it into a lucrative country and Tamils, from the very beginning were instrumental in making Malaysia a successful land, for which they had to bear hardships and excruciating pain. The laborer's that were sent to Malaysia, had to face a lot of hardships, with more than 1 million suffering fatalities and many other succumbed to other diseases and snake bites owing to the poor working conditions.
Soon, the British retreated from Malaysia and an independent government was formed. The development and growth opportunities, enticed many Chinese and Tamils to settle here.
Reservations in Malaysia
The Malaysia government has proposed a law that gives priority or reservations to true Malaysians in employment and work related areas.
The Chinese and Tamils felt at a great disadvantage because they were not given equal opportunities or the jobs that they desired and even if they did, they were not remunerated fairly.
The Chinese were overwhelmed with hate and dissent and formed their own gang or troop and embraced all illegal traits (Depicted in the movie- Kabali).
They roped in the Tamils as well and soon the Tamils became suppliers for illicit supplies and members of drug mafia groups, resulting in an increased school drop-out rate and poor quality of life.
Tamils are widespread in Malaysia even today, with 500 Tamil medium schools, all bustling with Tamil children. Tamils have remained consistent in their strive for equality and a better life.
They helped make Malaysia what it is today and it's only fair, that they be treated at par with every other citizen of Malaysia, and this is only possible when the government recognizes the contribution of the minorities in building their lucrative nation, and give them the respect and remuneration they deserve.
