“Loss of Legend Who Made Our Childhood Memorable”
Gene Deitch, born in Chicago on August 8,1924, arrived in Prague in 1956 with the intention of staying for 10 days, but fell in love with a girl and remained in the Czechoslovakian capital. Deitch was survived by his wife and three sons from his first marriage, all of whom are illustrators and cartoonists.
He Was Nominated for Three Academy Awards
He was first nominated for a best short film Oscar in 1958 for ‘Sidney’s family tree’, a 6-minute animated movie, which he co-produced and directed. In 1961, he won an Oscar in the same category for 'Munro', a 9-minute-long Czechoslovak-American comedy.
In a career spanning nearly six decades, Deitch directed popular cartoons like "Tom terrific", "Nudnik" among many others.
From 1961 to 1962, he directed approximately 13 episodes of 'Tom and Jerry' for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and multiple episodes of 'Popeye the Sailor' for King Features Syndicate TV between 1960 and 1963.
Worked in Communist Czechoslovakia
He created some of his best work from the erstwhile Czechoslovakia’s capital, including Tom and Jerry and in his memoir for the Love of Prague’, Deitch recounts living in communist Czechoslovakia as an American and then in the Czech Republic after the 1989 Velvet Revolution.
He Won the Winsor Mccay Award for His Lifetime Contribution to Animation in 2004.
His death is a big loss for us all. He made most of our childhood entertaining and ensured us to learn many moral things which help us in leading a happy and respectful life.
Many people show their gratitude over the death of Deitch and many of them are consoled by posting stories regarding Deitch.
