India is one of the best countries for medical education because of the vast variety of medical conditions which you get to see here, low cost of education, highly qualified and renowned teachers, and a shorter duration of study compared to the US or UK.
Of Course, the research sector is still underdeveloped.
Tell us about your background and journey.
After completing his Master’s in Surgery from PUNE, India DR. CHIRAG BHANDARI worked in the Department of Urology at renowned Bhandari Hospital and Research Center, Jaipur.
He was moved by the sorry state of male patients coming to his outpatient department with problems related to their sex life like impotency, premature ejaculation, male infertility issues. Patients narrated how depressed and hopeless they were because of these problems which have caused them immense mental, emotional, financial, social, and personal stress.
He decided to train himself in-depth about Male Factor Infertility and Male Reproductive and Sexual Health Problems From One Of The Best Male Sexual Health Institutes In The World- University College London Hospital, London, UK so that he can serve his countrymen better. He underwent intense training in Andrology and Male Sexual Health Problems at the world-renowned University College London Hospital, London.
He also completed training in Sexual Medicine after successfully passing the fellowship exam in Lisbon, Portugal in 2018.
How important is a super specialization for doctors?
I think super specialization is very important for doctors today as it gives them additional expertise in treating specific disorders.
Also because of the internet, the patients are becoming much more aware of their problems and want to seek help only from a specialist. Gone are the days where one doctor used to treat multiple problems.
What is your take on virtual methods of providing treatment?
I feel that virtual methods of providing consultation to patients are the need of the hour not just because of the COVID but also because people are way too busy to visit a doctor.
Also, it saves them time and money. But virtual consultation is good only for certain medical conditions which patients must understand.
What do you feel are the good and bad points about being a doctor?
This pandemic has taught us that health is the pattern of utmost importance and who knows about health better than a doctor. The respect which doctors get is unparalleled.
The bad thing about being a doctor is that he/she becomes an easy target for public dissent if anything goes wrong with the patient which sometimes can risk his/her life as well.
Which countries are the best for studying medicine?
As of now, India is one of the best countries for medical education because of the vast variety of medical conditions which you get to see here, low cost of education, highly qualified and renowned teachers, and a shorter duration of study compared to the US or UK. Of Course, the research sector is still underdeveloped.
UK, Australia, Canada, and the US are and have always been the top places to study medicine due to their world-class infrastructure and well-structured curriculum.
Which is your favourite book and why?
My favourite book is the book from my field of expertise which is Sexual Medicine as every time I read it I learn something new from it. It helps me in diagnosing and treating my patients who have very rare disorders and that gives me immense pleasure.
What impact do you want to create in the medical field?
I wish to inculcate sex education in the curriculum of schools as it will help them understand human sexuality better and they will be much more open to talking about it with their parents and peers.
Also, I would like to spread awareness about various sexual problems in society so that patients avoid going to quacks and spending their hard-earned money on non-scientific treatments.
The big picture I see in doing this is decreasing the sexual offences in society, decreasing unwanted teenage pregnancies, and having a healthier and fulfilled sexual, mental, and physical life of an individual.
