Dr Neha Mehta - I Have an Expertise in Marital, Child and Sexual Issues (Psychologist From India)

There are a lot of myths in society about psychology. The major one is psychology is very easy and anyone can be a psychologist after doing a 2 or 3 months course which is completely false. Also, people feel that psychology is completely waste and the least earning job.

Trust me, it's the best job if you are passionate about it, it has a vast scope. As well as there are lots of myth regarding counselling, that only medicine can work in mental health disorders.

Tell us about your background and journey.

I’m a Registered Indian Psychologist practising for 10 years in clinical psychology. I have trained more than 50 interns in clinical settings, courses, and
workshops, Treated more than 2000 patients all over the globe related to mental health disorders and basic life challenges. I’m the founder of the mental health portal My Fit Brain, India where we have a team of 500+ psychologists, doctors, psychotherapists providing tele counselling at affordable and in more than 15 regional languages of India.

I have an expertise in marital, child and sexual issues. Being a psychologist was complete destiny, In class 10th I remember my chemistry teacher told me that you are a very good communicator because I was a master in convincing students, regarding buying a book or maybe convincing teachers to delay the test. Later, because I was very good at biology, took bachelors in medical science from Delhi University.

During my internship, I got posted in the psychiatry department, I remember that I dealt with one case which was extremely violent and not cooperating with the treatment, With my approach he started interacting with me and I was able to rehabilitate him. MYyTeacher and my professor really appreciated my work, and my life turned. I did my master in psychology, registration diploma. I'm also accredited with NIMHANS.

I also hold MBA in hospitality and currently I have a chain of clinics in India where we provide face to face and tell counselling sessions so that Indian people could also understand the importance of therapeutic communication as a treatment module.

What are some common myths in society about psychology?

There are a lot of myths in society about psychology. The major one is psychology is very easy and anyone can be a psychologist after doing a 2 or 3 months course which is completely false. Also, people feel that psychology is completely waste and the least earning job.

Trust me, it's the best job if you are passionate about it, it has a vast scope. As well as there are lots of myth regarding counselling, that only medicine can work in mental health disorders. Counselling and therapy don't work at all. Moreover, people feel counselling is not a profession family can counsel, friends can counsel.

Professional is not required. I'm through me all social media handles trying to burst myths related to mental health issues and professional's rights. My youtube has more than 1.50 lakh subscribers where I openly advocate mental health issues are common and seek help for the same.

How can people practice mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a very basic routine we don't need practice for it. Mindfulness is a conscious effort of living in present, anyone can start it at any time For example, if you are drinking a glass of water, Mindfulness means being in present without thinking about the future or past like looking at the glass, feeling how water is going in my body, how clean this water is and grateful to have clean water to drink, the imagination of the glass, look for a bubble in the water, taste etc.

We can start doing everything in a day mindfully, it will keep us active and away from all the mental stress The only Reason, people get into traps of negativity is that they think a lot about their future or past. And BEING IN PRESENT is the only solution that works miracles.

What are your tips for people who want to practice this profession?

Definitely, from my experience I wish to share some with my students, interns, psychology enthusiast and aspirants as follows:

1. Work on Awareness: The more you talk, The more it benefits

2. Use social media platforms: Don't just sit with traditional marketing ways or under a doctor. Start promoting yourself, use Instagram, Facebook. Groups, telegrams and reach people.

3. Practice: Don't look for shortcuts(3-4 months course). Read a lot. Do good internships. Being a psychologist doesn't need a degree, it needs learning on how to work on human emotions and it will come with practice.

4. Know your niche: Only counselling and clinical psychology are not the fields. We have child psychology, neuropsychology, criminal, forensics, sports, industrial, deaddiction, rehabilitation and lots of fields. Know them before choosing the right one for you.

5. Tie-Ups: Speak for Universities, news channel, live shows. Interaction is the key
