Jinal Patel - Being an Artist Is Still Not Considered as a Career in Society (HR & Choreographer From India)

I am double dating, Oh wait before you think otherwise - I double date my 9-5 job and my passion. Because it's all about chasing your dreams at your own pace and giving your whole heart, soul and every ounce of dedication that your dream deserves, more importantly, you deserve.

Tell us more about your background and journey.

I come from a middle-class Gujarati family and no one in my family ever imagined that I would take up dancing so seriously and get into it.

Professionally, I am a B.Techgraduate holding an MBA degree and working in a corporate alongside being a wedding choreographer.

As a child I always loved dancing and I was put into a Bharatanatyam dance school and that’s where my journey began.

When did you first decide you wanted to pursue dancing and how did you start?

I always wanted to dance but I had no clarity 2016 onwards I started exploring, attending several classes, took training, joined workshops and gained knowledge and more importantly gained confidence.

In 2018 I slowly started teaching and managing event choreography and that process made me fall in love with dance all over again and since then there has been no single day that I spent without dancing.

Who is your favourite dancer and why?

I look up to so many people around me be it my student or a co-artist that I work with or other creators on Instagram. Each one has a unique selling price and there is so much to absorb from each one of them.

Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a dancer?

Being a dancer/choreographer/artist is still not fully considered as a job or career in society, but I believe it is equivalent to other paid jobs. Being a dancer you have to keep your arms open and embrace even the smallest opportunity.

What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

All I can say is you cannot become something overnight, you literally cannot. Have patience be kind to yourself, train yourself. Understand the process and don’t rush.

Trust your art and consistently work for it with all that you have. Make sure you are the most hardworking in the room.

Which is your favourite boo
k and why?

The secret by Rhonda Bryne. This book has honestly changed my life in many aspects and all for the good. It has taught me to believe in the power of the universe and how powerful it feels to be filled with gratitude and positivity.
