Kamal Kishore Kumawat - Disorganization Reduces Productivity (Cofounder & Director - Edgistify)

Managing time and giving appropriate importance to every relationship in all realms of life has been the most challenging part of my journey. I tackled it by prioritizing the work accordingly and employing various time management strategies. Did my level best to stick to the plans and adhere to a structured timetable.

Tell us about your background, journey, and upbringing.

Born in the Nuclear City of India and child to a father working as a Scientific Officer in a Nuclear Power Plant, I was always keen on building something innovative. With my father’s guidance, I completed my degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay. My passion for innovation during my college days led me on the path of the founding of ‘Dealwithus’, a cashback portal.

I always wanted to build innovative solutions which can add value to the ecosystem, this thought was the idea behind my decision of establishing Edgistify with my fellow cofounders Umang Shukla and Antim Suman. My family has always been supportive of my ventures. It is due to my family and college friends' support and interaction that helped me in building a new thesis in different industries.

When and how did you get clarity on what you wanted to do?

Right from the beginning. I was fortunate enough that I was born in a family giving prominent importance to good quality of education and pursuing a passion. Of course, the decision of starting the entrepreneurial journey was taken once I entered the industry but as a child, I had been always taught for aiming high.

Studies today show that an organization can lose INR 10 lakh (~ $17,000) on average on a wrong hire or for hiring someone with a false degree. The only tried and tested way to prevent frauds is via a thorough background verification process. What does your typical workday look like?

Disorganization reduces productivity. The first thing that I do before starting my routine work is chalking out a to-do list and adhering to it. Organizing the tasks and arranging them based on their level of urgency helps me in striking off these tasks at the end of the day. I also make sure that I go through all the industry updates and keep myself updated about the recent trends and innovations in the supply chain and logistics industry.

After which I resume my daily meetings. In the latter half of the day, I make sure that I get updates from every team that has been assigned some task by me. According to my, there should be at least an hour of brainstorming session daily in which I and my team can pop up with new ideas that can be implemented keeping up with the market requirements. At the end of the day, I pen down at least one goal and strategy for achieving in the near future.

Several global companies have come out and thrown their support behind not needing a formal education. What is your opinion about this?

Skills and the ability to understand your calling are of prominent importance. Vocational learning cannot be achieved through formal education. It comes with experience. But formal education provides you with degrees and certificates that will help verify your achievements. There is no doubt that a degree can define your worth but a degree gives a sense of validity to your basic understanding.

How do you handle someone who has lied on their resume?

Organization and perseverance are the keys to efficient hiring. In my opinion, when faced with the possibility that an employee lied on their resume, the first step is to move from rumor to fact. Once the cat is out of the bag, the level of deception determines retention or termination.

Also if the person is already an employee then his potential can be used as a scale for making the decision. But if it’s a potential employee, then asking questions related to their self-proclaimed skill set can make things crystal clear. After which I usually deny employment gracefully. This becomes a win-win situation, as we secured from hiring such person without causing harm to the candidate’s dignity.

What are some of your typical challenges and how have they evolved over time?

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs or those eyeing the top job?

As Famous Quote by Sidney Sheldon – “Life is like a novel. It’s filled with suspense. You have no idea what is going to happen until you turn the page.” I think the mantra to succeed in today’s world as an entrepreneur is to keep moving forward. And take up challenges that scare you the most. Only when you step out of your comfort zone, you become aware of your abilities and limitations. One should keep it simple – Break big problems into smaller ones and tackle each one head-on.

Which is your favorite book and why?

Zero to One by Peter Thiel & Blake. The author has very well highlighted that the only way for start-ups towards monopoly is to make 0 to 1, and make the product 10x better than closest competitors, developing proprietary technology. Since we have built a start-up that plans to bring about technological revolution and organize the unorganized sector of supply chain and logistics through the means of digitalization, I can relate to this book.
