Megha Chakraborty - Earning Is Based on How Many Campaigns or Collaborations You Are Doing With Brands (Digital Content Creator, Kolkata, India)

There are so many apps where you can look for inspiration but at the same time, it can be anywhere. You can get inspired by a movie character, from a character you read about in a novel, a particular location even from a particular outfit. I do the same, for me it's anything I see around.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I am 19 years old, born and based in Kolkata. I am currently pursuing a Geography Hons. I belong to a middle-class family, I live with my parents and my elder brother.

Also, I am a cat mom, taking a hundred snaps of my cats is something I do on a daily basis. I also play the guitar, or I would say I am still learning. That's something not many people know about me as I don't put it out on social media much but I do enjoy it a lot. Also, I do read and journal sometimes.

I have always wanted to be independent, be it financially or emotionally. My parents also encouraged me to do so, so did my brother. They have always been very supportive and I'm very grateful for that.

My journey has been great. I am grateful for every part of it. By saying great I don't mean it was full of joy and success, I have had bad days, I still do, but I feel that should also be a part of everyone's journey and that is. The best thing I have ever said was "Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path" I strongly believe in this, I believe that trusting the process is the best thing I can do because everything happens for a reason.

2. What led you to start your blog and what is it about?

I always loved clicking pictures, be it some random things, or people, but I was never into clicking pictures of myself because I wasn't confident enough. After school I got a phone and I started clicking pictures of myself and posted them on my private account on Instagram, this way I started feeling more confident about myself and I started a page where I was posting make-up related content but soon I realised that was not my cup of tea so I stopped, took a break and began posting normal pictures and then I came across to few content creators who were posting self-portraits.

I remember last year around April my brother got a new phone, so I just casually got ready, clicked few pictures, edited them and posted them on my page.

The best part of clicking self-portraits is I don't have to be shy just like I do when it comes to someone else clicking my pictures, I can be myself, I can express my emotions through it, and that helped me a lot to be confident about myself as well.

The moment I started posting those pictures on my page people started liking my work, by saying people I mean my friends and people I actually knew because back then I had 300 followers, but within a month I could see that even strangers are coming to my profile and some of them sent me sweet messages saying how much they like my work and that's how I got motivated and that's what kept me going. But I didn't know how content creation actually works, I learnt it by the time and from my fellow creators.

3. Is it financially sustainable to be a digital creator these days?

Instagram doesn't offer monetary incentives so the earning is based on how many campaigns or collaborations you are doing with brands, it's very uncertain especially for small creators like me.

Like you can get 3 collaborations in a month and then the next month you don't receive even one. So having a backup plan or a side job is great if you are starting out and that will also help you to worry less and focus on your content more.

4. How can someone become a successful content creator?

I don't consider myself a successful content creator yet, I have come a long way and I still have a long way to go but if I talk about the small achievements then yes that also took a lot of effort and that's why I count blessings every day.

So if you are just starting out, then these 4 things will lead you to get what you want to achieve.

  • Dedication
  • Consistency (I myself lack at this, but trust me this helps a lot)
  • Being yourself
  • And make sure you are doing something you like.

Also before putting yourself out there you have to remember that social media has its bad side too, people will try to bring you down but you have to remember that not everyone has to like you or your work, do what you like, your hard work will pay off.

5. How and where do you find inspiration to churn out content?

There are so many apps where you can look for inspiration but at the same time, it can be anywhere. You can get inspired by a movie character, from a character you read about in a novel, a particular location even from a particular outfit. I do the same, for me it's anything I see around.

6. Who is your favourite creator and why?

It's hard to choose one. But I would say all my fellow creators are doing great, I truly admire their content, so first it would be them and then I truly admire Mansi ugale, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila, Shristi patch, Komal Pandey and so many others.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

I am more into reading fiction, but recently I have been reading this book called Good Vibes Good Life by Vex king. Considering the current situation it's helping me a lot in taking care of my mental health. Besides that, I love to read Murakami's book, and my last read was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.
