Why Is Biryani More Than Just a Food in India?


The word Biriyani is enough to make someone crave and instantly their taste buds get awakened and their mouth starts watering. Biryani is derived from the Persian word Birian, which means 'fried before cooking', and Birinj, the Persian word for rice. This dish is extremely famous in India and its neighboring countries. 

You can see a biriyani shop almost everywhere now. According to people, biriyani is more than food, it's an emotion. It has become a compulsory Sunday dish in many families. 

Origin of Biryani in India 

Biriyani was introduced to India by the Turk-Mongol conqueror Timur in 1938. In the Malabar coast, biriyani was introduced by the Arab traders who would frequently visit those places. However, the most popular story traces the origin of the dish to Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan's beautiful queen who inspired the Taj Mahal. 

Varieties of Biryani

There are different ways to prepare Biriyani because people cook it in a style based on the ingredients that are found plenty in their locality. Different types of biriyanis are vegetable biriyani, kushka, egg biriyani, chicken biriyani, mutton biriyani, prawn biriyani, fish biriyani, and so on. 

The style of preparation differs from place to place. All this starts with the difference in the rice used for biriyani, some of the different types of biriyani rice are Basmati rice, Jeerakasala Rice, Seeraga samba, and plain usual white rice. So, let's unravel some of the different kinds of biriyani found in our country. 

  • Kashmiri Biryani 

Kashmiri Biriyani is known for the extra addition of kewra essence, asafetida and saffron. 

  • Hyderabadi Biryani 

The most famous biriyani of India is the Hyderabadi biriyani. This biriyani is rendered spicy than any other biriyani. 

  • Calcutta Biryani

This type of biriyani has a sweet taste in it. The spices used in this recipe are milder than the others and potato is one of the main ingredients of the Calcutta biriyani. 

  • Mughlai Biryani

Mughlai Biryani emerged in the kitchens of the Nawabs. Curd and dry fruits are mandatory in the preparation of this biriyani. It is flavorsome and is a dish fit for royalty. This style of Biryani can be commonly seen in Delhi. 

  • Ambur Biryani 

Originated from Tamil Nadu, Ambur biriyani is known for its spicy taste. Brinjal masala is the perfect accompaniment for this mouthwatering biryani. 

  • Dindigul Thalappakatti Biryani 

Yet another famous Biryani from Tamil Nadu comes from the place called Dindigul Thalapakatti. It has a tangy taste thanks to the addition of curd and lemons. But it does not use tomatoes. 

  • Malabar Biryani/ Thalassery Biryani 

The Biryani is prepared with Kheema, small-grain thin rice, and appealingly garnished with sauteed dry fruits. There are two types of Malabar biriyani, salt, and sweet type. 

Why is Biryani Famous? 

Perceiving that innumerable varieties of biriyani are found; we can say that people enjoy this dish because they can choose between which type of biriyani suits them. It’s a complete meal by itself. 

Every style is extremely tasty, and it can be prepared with different ingredients. So that’s why biriyani holds a special place in people’s hearts.
