If I were to ask if you knew how many countries are present in today’s world, what would be your answer? Well, you’d be guessing a random number, right? Well, so was I until I searched up the internet and began to dive deep into this simple, yet intriguing question. And the more I researched, the more I came across some interesting facts.

What is a Country?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a country is defined as an area of land that has its government, army, etc. Another explanation defines a country basically as a region characterized by specific borders or boundaries and also different geographies. It could be a state associated with a larger one that has fixed political norms, or it could be a sovereign nation with its own government.

However, today many people claim that a region is not a country unless it has been recognized by the United Nations. Then, according to this theory, there are 195 countries in the world today, of which 2 are observer states – The Holy See Vatican City and the State of Palestine.

These 195 countries are all affiliated with the United Nations and they are all recognized as independent countries by every organization all around the world. However, some theories also state that there are around 249 countries in the world today.

List of Countries and their Capitals:

So let's have a look at the all countries of the world along with their capitals. Please note that if you see the same country more than once on two different continents, it is only because that they have one portion of their country in one continent and the remaining portion of their country in the other country and they are connected by Geographical territories.
