About the book

Twelfth Night is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare that is said to have been composed about 1601–1602 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment at the Christmas season end. The story revolves around Viola and Sebastian, twins who are parted in a shipwreck. Viola (as Cesario) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who, in turn, is infatuated with Lady Olivia. Lady Olivia falls in love with Viola after meeting her and mistaking her for a man.

Play’s Summary

In the domain of Illyria, Duke Orsino laments his unrequited love for Lady Olivia, who has been in sorrow for her brother for seven years and has refused to see anybody. Meanwhile, a storm off the coast has sunk a ship, stranding the young noblewoman Viola on the seashore. Viola thinks that her twin brother, Sebastian, with whom she was traveling, is dead when she finds herself alone with the captain.

She hears about the country from the captain, who happened to be born in Illyria by coincidence, and chooses to disguise her identity and offer her services to this Lady. The captain warns Viola, however, that Olivia refuses to see anybody. Viola decides to hide her identity by dressing herself as Cesario, a pageboy, and going to work for Orsino. The captain agrees to assist her.

Viola makes rapid progress in Orsino's home. She quickly falls in love with Orsino, but she is unable to pursue their relationship since Orsino believes she is (the male) Cesario.

At the same time, Olivia falls passionately drawn to "Cesario," whom Orsino sends to Olivia's house to court her in his place. Only Viola truly understands the love triangle created by her disguise: she adores Orsino, Orsino adores Olivia, and Olivia adores her. None of their desires can be realized.

While Orsino, Viola, and Olivia's plot unfold, scenes at Olivia's house introduce the second cast of characters: Olivia's charming lady-in-waiting, Maria; the clown, Feste; Olivia's drunken uncle, Sir Toby; his equally vulgar friend and suitor for Olivia, Sir Andrew Aguecheek; and Malvolio, Olivia's self-important steward, who constantly scolds and irritates the rest of them. Maria implements a prank to get revenge against Malvolio.

She falsifies a letter was written to an unknown lover, in which she tells the reader to dress in yellow stockings and crossed garters, act arrogant, grin continuously, and fail to explain himself to prove that he appreciates Olivia's sentiments. Malvolio discovers the letter and deduces that he is the unknown lover. He answers to "Olivia's" commands in such an unusual way that she feels he has gone insane.

Sebastian, Viola's twin brother comes to Illyria soon after: he was saved from the shipwreck by a local, Antonio, but believes his sister is dead. Although Orsino is an old rival, Antonio has become so devoted to Sebastian that he follows him into Orsino's territory.

Sir Toby convinces Sir Andrew to challenge Cesario to a fight when he notices Olivia's feelings for Cesario. They're ready to fight when Antonio arrives and requests that he protect Cesario, whom he mistook for Sebastian. (In her disguise, Viola appears identical to her twin brother.) Cesario flees as Orsino's cops arrive and arrest Antonio.

Sebastian, on the other hand, has a chance to arrive on the scene. Sir Andrew and Sir Toby continue their rivalry, thanking him for Cesario. Sebastian is puzzled, but he stands tough. Olivia arrives during the fighting and, mistaking Sebastian for Cesario, orders Toby and Andrew to leave right once. She wants Sebastian is to marry her right now. Sebastian is confused. However, he accepts Olivia's proposal since she is attractive and wealthy.

Meanwhile, Olivia assumes that Malvolio is insane and has permitted Maria, Toby, and the others to "treat" him by locking him up in a dark cell. They take pleasure in torturing and humiliating him.

Sir Toby, on the other hand, begins to be concerned, knowing how upset Olivia is with him for hitting Sebastian (or, as she thinks, Cesario). As a result, they allowed Malvolio to write Olivia a letter in which he argued his case and demanded his release.

Olivia's house is visited by Cesario and Orsino. Olivia accepts Cesario as her husband, mistakenly believing him to be Sebastian. Orsino is surprised and angry, but everything falls into place when Sebastian himself comes on the scene. Sebastian and Viola have reunited. Orsino confesses his love for Viola and begs her to marry him now that he knows Cesario is the lady she claims to be. Sir Toby and Maria are said to have married secretly as well.

Olivia finally recalls Malvolio and summons him from the darkness. He confronts her, enraged. When she tells him, he shouldn't take things so seriously, he vows to enact revenge on them all and storms out. The happy pair are looking forward to their wedding ceremony.
