Elena Masci - My Work Represents Externalizing And Figuring What I Feel And What The Observer Can Feel To (Artist, Italy)

I never decided to be an artist. It was simply a consequence of my passion. I just wanted to draw.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. Initially I used to copy my favorite Disney's cartoons and then I studied scenography creating realistic portraits in graphite. Only recently, I made my steps into the world of digital art.

2. When did you decide you wanted to be an artist?

I never decided to be an artist. It was simply a consequence of my passion. I just wanted to draw.

3. What does your work aim to say?

My work represents externalizing and figuring what I feel and what the observer can feel to. As I declared in another interview: a rose from the chest can mean blooming again or being pierced by a passion.

4. How has your practice changed over time?

Over the years my technique has improved a lot, due to my everyday practice trying to give to details as much attention as possible.

5.Where do you get your inspirations to create art?

I am inspired by faces, expressions that can arouse particular sensations in me. Regarding the abstract components, they go out according with the mood that I intend to represent at the moment.

6. How does your work comment on current social or political issues?

I don't usually deal with political or social issues. I did this about the death of George Floyd, as it was a particularly shocking and non-sense event. I wanted to send a message through my art.

7. How do you navigate the art world?

Mainly in museums. I am lucky to be born in Italy, the Country with the greatest works of art in the world.

8.What does your typical day look like?

During this pandemic situation, paradoxically I have worked and created much more. Being passionate about cinema, I have always combined a good film with working hours. For this reason some of my illustrations represent characters from movies or TV series.

9.What piece of advice would you like to give to future aspiring illustrators?

Listen to yourselves. Listen to your emotions, and you will see that something unique will appear.

10.What is your long term plan/ future plans?

Keep doing what I love. Get to know and collaborate with people from all over the world and erase distances through art and the platforms who share it.

11. Which is your favorite book and why?

I don't have a particular favorite book, but I like artist biographies. Frida, is one of them.

- Elena Masci

I was born and raised in Foligno, a city in Umbria, in central Italy.

Since I was a child I have had a passion for drawing, I can't remember a single day without drawing.

For this reason, growing up I decided to attend an art institute (Leoncillo Leonardo, in Spoleto) to get to know the various techniques better.

The digital world is the consequence and the evolution of this passion, and allows me to express myself.
