Laura Lambert - As Covid-19 Took Me Out Of My ‘Comfort Zone’, I Decided It Was Time To ‘Take The Plunge’ & Start My Voice Acting Business To Expand My Client Base (Voice Actor, USA)

For anyone interested in voice acting, I would first congratulate them then I would strongly suggest reading aloud to themselves on a daily basis. Another couple of suggestions would be to Google any key words or phrases related to the kind of work you’re interested in (do your research) and join networks of like-minded people

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

My journey began over 25 years ago. I moved down to Lexington, Kentucky to study Horticulture at the University of Kentucky. My plans changed, however, after a friend asked me to assist her with her two- hour weekly radio show. Unbeknownst to me, she was grooming to me take over as the host. It was great fun and led to another gig in radio. Then, I moved back up to Minnesota, to finish school (Broadcasting).

Upon graduating, I found another on air position and quickly decided that I preferred writing, voicing and mixing commercials and other production. I became Production Director at a News/Talk radio station, followed by a Country radio station. Since then, I’ve worked at two small on hold production companies. Unfortunately, Covid-19 hit us pretty hard, and as a small company, I found myself without a job. I do continue to work with them in a freelance capacity.

2. What inspired you to become a voice over artist?

As Covid-19 took me out of my ‘comfort zone’, I decided it was time to ‘take the plunge’ and start my own voice acting business to expand my client base. When I was quite young, my older sister received a Panasonic tape recorder for her birthday. Being the younger sister, I was the perfect ‘guinea pig’.

II think I was also a bit of a ham, so we recorded wacky interviews and parodies of TV shows. That got my creative juices flowing at an early age.

3. Do you often have to keep upskilling yourself?

It is so important to have a love of learning. You never ‘know it all’. Voice acting classes via Zoom; webinars on different aspects of the industry; conversations with VO actors I’m connected to on LinkedIn…I’ve learned so much frplatform.om all of these experiences and more. I will always be open to learning new things!

4. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring voice artists?

For anyone interested in voice acting, I would first congratulate them…then I would strongly suggest reading aloud to themselves on a daily basis. Another couple of suggestions would be to Google any key words or phrases related to the kind of work you’re interested in (do your research) and join networks of like-minded people.

Its amazing how many mutually beneficial relationships you can make! LinkedIn is a great networking platform.

5. Who is your role model and why?

When I saw the Sprint commercials that Sela Ward did back in the early 2000s…wow, I loved her delivery! Her voice had a low register, like mine, and she was casual and fun! That really left an impression on me.

6. What is your mantra of success?

Cool question! My mantra is “Have patience and trust the Universe”. Naturally, you need to have a game plan and be willing to work hard. But, until I realized that we are all made of the same stuff, that we all, in fact, are a part of what makes the Universe flow, I had been experiencing some serious anxiety.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

There are so many, but I really enjoyed “How to be a Good Creature” (2018) by Sy Montgomery. I’m going to cheat, however, and add “Chosen by a Horse” (2006) by Susan Richards, as well.

Ass someone who has enjoyed the company of many wonderful animals in my life, these books spoke to me, as the authors shared their wonderful experiences with animals that taught them so much.

Laura Lambert

My name is Laura Lambert. I offer you a warm, mature female voice in a North American dialect and can be reached at lauralambertvoiceover.com.

My interest in voice work started at an early age. It all began when my older sister received a Panasonic tape recorder for her birthday. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those crazy interviews and TV show parodies we’d put together inspired my young, creative mind.

My background in audio started in radio when I began as the host of a weekly two-hour program on a public radio station. Then onto commercial radio…easy listening, news/talk and country. I then realized that I preferred writing, voicing and mixing commercials. I moved on to production studios and now work from my home studio.

I can be deadpan or high energy, but I prefer to be “the woman next door”. It all depends on the dialogue and your direction, of course. I have enjoyed lending my interpretive skills to the Red Cross, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and the Missouri Department of Conservation. My clients have included banks, dentists, restaurants and home decorating centers.

I have a passion for telling a story using the warmth of the human voice and the music of words. I look forward to bringing you the quality product you deserve with the turnaround time you require.
