Sticking to a fitness program comes down to your mindset – and that is usually the make or break point for many!
1. Tell us more about yourself and your profession.
I’m Aarja Bedi, a 24-year-old Certified Fitness Instructor and influencer with a passion for striking a balance between enjoying life to its max whilst being physically and mentally fit.
Stepping into the world of health and fitness molded me into the person that I am today. Without those two things, I would never have had the confidence, determination, the drive to strive and accomplish, and everything that I have done today and continue to aim for the best.
My passion lies in teaching people to love their bodies through the power of sweat! I strongly believe that every person has the potential to becomes their best version and is capable of leading a healthier, and more fulfilling lifestyle even with their busy schedules.
Taking out 30-45 minutes in a day to work on you, for you is honestly the best type of self-love you can shower on yourself and be left with the most empowering feeling! I train clients to make fitness a part of their lifestyle and motivate them to aim for the highest because there is always a way to push forward, and sometimes you need someone to give you that extra push towards the right direction – and that’s where I step in!
I love the fast-paced hustle life and enjoy being on my feet for the most time possible. I implement this momentum and mindset into my coaching sessions as well and enjoy bringing out positivity and high levels of energy in my workouts. My joy in training, so far, has been in seeing clients more confident in themselves and pushing them each session to overcome hurdles that they thought would never be possible.
My dream is to continue turning this passion into a profession, diversify into similar verticles and that’s what drives me to learn and grow each day, help as many people as I can, and be the best in what I do – one day and workout at a time!
2. What is your fitness mantra?
Fit looks different for everybody, so don’t focus only on how you look, rather begin to focus on creating a healthy lifestyle and the rest will follow.
Sticking to a fitness program comes down to your mindset – and that is usually the make or break point for many!
The way I look and approach fitness is about building sustainable and enjoyable habits that get molded into your lifestyle because you won’t always have the motivation to get in some exercise, nor will you have the best workouts every single day – but on these days is when the disciple comes into play and those hard days is what speaks more about your willingness to achieve the goals. If you truly believe you can reach your goals, you will. If you’re still doubting yourself, sticking to a workout plan may feel a little trickier.
I strongly believe that It’s so important to remember that exercising is an act of self-love. The more of it you have for yourself, the more likely you are to stick to your goals. Our bodies naturally want to move, so show yourself some love by working up a sweat and bring yourself a step closer to a healthier, happier, and stronger you!
3. What are some of the major misconceptions about diets and exercises?
The health and wellness industry has been growing at quite a rapid pace over the last 1-2 years, and along with this growth comes an exorbitant rise in the ridiculous misconceptions about diets and exercises! Clarifying and busting myths is something that has become a part of my day-to-day life at this point!
Especially as a female trainer, the biggest misconception I hear and would like to address is – “lifting weights will make women bulky”. No, they won't! In reality, you’d build muscle, gain strength, feel more confident, boost your metabolism and get tons of other benefits with no drawbacks – and I strongly urge every woman to start strength training. Another HUGE misconception that needs to be cleared time and again is – “Cardio is the best for weight loss”.
No. it’s not the best for weight loss. Eating in a calorie deficit is the only and best way to lose weight. Yes, cardio can aid the process, but you need to be consuming lesser calories you’re burning, and what will go a long way other than cardio is if you start strength training whilst keeping your food consumption in check! You will definitely be on the road to success! Yet another one heard by people at the beginning of their fitness/ weight loss journeys – “Skipping meals will help you lose weight”.
Heck no! This has been fantasized so much and is just inviting for more trouble! The lesser you eat – the body stores that food preciously and it’ll be harder to lose weight if you don’t nourish properly fam! An extremely controversial claim, “Carbs make you fat” – but I am here to burst the bubble again. No, they don’t.
Eating in a Calorie surplus over a prolonged period of time is what makes you fat. More common amongst us women is the topic of SPOT REDUCTION – but let’s get this clear, you can’t lose weight from your thighs and arms. Wish it was that easy – we all would be at our perfect figures then! But unfortunately, you don’t get to dictate where you lose fat from – but yes you can work on targeted areas!
And lastly one for the newbies into training who get swayed into believing this, “you’ve got to feel sore the next day after a workout for it to work”. How does that even make sense?
4. How can one maintain a healthy lifestyle?
I personally feel that a healthy lifestyle is based on the principle of self-improvement. Your positive outlook towards life will give you the drive to perform the required tasks easily. Positivity is a state of mind, so we should train our minds to see only the good and ignore the rest.
A few things that’ll help you strike the balance and maintain a convenient yet healthy lifestyle:
A) Exercise regularly – to maintain a healthy lifestyle out body needs to stay energetic, so 30-45 mins of exercise 3-5 days a week should be on your agenda!
B) Maintain a healthy diet – I personally preach and teach Following an 80/20 approach with your diet. 80% whole and healthy foods, and 20% of soul foods!
C) Relax your mind – do things that de-stress you. Take out time for leisure! Enjoy with family and friends, go on adventures and travel the world!
D) Stay well hydrated!
E) Ensure you’re getting good quality sleep every night!
5. How can one build a successful career in your field?
The health and fitness industry is booming and diversifying at a rapid speed. There are so many specializing one can get into. The first step would be to identify the niche you want to excel in - specialize in the area that interests you the most! Get certified, get in touch, and network with people!
It is so much you can learn from one other and it's motivating to be supported by people and learn from their experiences. Other than that I think the most important things are, that you:
Be you.
Be original.
Be transparent.
Provide value.
Be approachable and connect with your audience!
The fitness industry is massive and has tons of potential paths you could choose. Be a master at what resonates the most with you so you can be your most authentic self while connecting with your clients/ potentials.
6. What is one piece of advice you would like to give someone who wishes to lose weight?
Be patient.
Stay consistent.
Trust and enjoy the process,
And don’t fall for any quick fixes and fad diets.
You should be working towards building long-term habits instead of short-term success points. Fitness is a journey – you might lose weight fast, but the tricky part is to keep that weight off in the long run. And in order to do that you have a maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Strive for progress and not perfection. It’s inhuman to be perfect and trying to reach perfection will become unmotivating in the long run. However, thinking about all the progress you’ve made and/or are going to make will get you jumping out of bed, motivated to crush another workout.
7. How do diets and exercise contribute to overall well-being and happiness?
There’s nothing more motivating to feel your best self overall than feeling like you are the reason for your goals. Knowing you always have your own back and are rooting for yourself is more powerful than you realize.
So get up and sweat it out for you — your strength, health, happiness, and peace!
